Key facts

Account activation

As fast as 1 min

Zaif says that if you apply with the My Number card check (JPKI, read with the TRUSTDOCK app) and nothing needs fixing, the account can open within seconds (counted here as 1 minute). Its guide puts it at seconds to the same day, and review can take anywhere from minutes to a few days.

Limits

WhatLimit
Buying crypto
  • ¥500,000 per order Each sales-desk (Kantan baibai) order is capped at the equivalent of ¥500,000, sells included. After an order at the cap you must wait 1 minute before the next one. The order book (Orderbook trading) only sets minimum order sizes. Source
  • ¥50,000,000 per day The sales desk's daily limit is ¥50 million (annex to the pre-contract document; listed for both buying and selling, the same for every coin). Source
Yen deposits
  • ¥9,990,000 per order Pay-easy deposits: up to ¥9,990,000 per payment; convenience-store deposits: up to ¥299,000 per payment; Zaif card deposits: up to ¥100,000 a month (excluding the fee). No cap is published for bank transfers, the main method. Source
Yen withdrawals
  • No daily limit The pre-contract document states there is no upper limit on withdrawal amounts (some requests or amounts can need extra checks and time). For the first week after your first yen deposit, though, withdrawals are limited to ¥10,000 equivalent a day. Fee: ¥385 under ¥30,000, ¥770 from ¥30,000. Source
Sending crypto out
  • Each coin has a maximum withdrawal quantity (e.g. 100 BTC, 1,000 ETH, 1,000 BCH, 5,000,000 XYM or XEM, 200,000 MONA). The document gives no period, so it is treated here as per withdrawal. ZPG, ZPGAG and ZPGPT can't be withdrawn. Source

First crypto send-out

You can send crypto once the account is approved and 2-step verification (required for crypto sends) is on. For one week from your first yen deposit, though, withdrawals, crypto included, are limited to ¥10,000 equivalent a day. Sends are normally processed within 2 bank business days, not counting the request day.

Protections against fraud

  • First yen deposit: for one week, whatever the deposit method, withdrawals are capped at ¥10,000 equivalent a day (an anti-fraud limit).
  • Pay-easy deposits: an amount equal to the deposit must stay in the account for one week (applies to each deposit).
  • Convenience-store deposits: about half of the deposit must stay in the account for one week (applies to each deposit).
  • Zaif card (credit) deposits: an amount equal to the deposit must stay in the account for 15 days (applies to each deposit).
  • A withdrawal to an address you have never sent to before is checked by Zaif's support team before processing, to prevent theft (they may email you to confirm).
  • Withdrawals flagged for review are also held until checked. Sends to contract addresses aren't accepted and are cancelled automatically.
  • A withdrawal left unprocessed for more than a week for any reason is cancelled and returned to your balance.

Transfer rules

Sending to your own (private) wallet
Allowed
What's required (Travel Rule)
Because of the Travel Rule, each send (or each saved address) needs: whether the recipient is you, the destination (pick the name if it's a Japanese exchange), the recipient's name in katakana and the alphabet, their postal code, country and region, and the purpose of the transfer. Your own name in the alphabet must also be registered. Saved addresses are added with a 2FA code, and you can choose to allow withdrawals only to registered addresses.
Destinations you can't send to
Zaif publishes no list of exchanges it can't send to. Sends to contract addresses are cancelled, and ZPG, ZPGAG and ZPGPT can't be withdrawn at all.

How to open an account

  1. 1

Download the app and sign up

Tap sign-up in the Zaif app (iOS/Android) and the registration page opens in a browser (you can also apply from a PC browser). Choose "Individual", enter your email and accept electronic delivery of documents, the terms, the pre-contract document and the privacy policy.

    1. Before you start, have your My Number card and its signature-certificate password (the 6–16 letters and numbers set when the card was issued) ready. You must be 18–79, and new accounts can only be verified with a My Number card.
    2. Install the Zaif app (by Zaif Inc.) from the App Store or Google Play. You can also apply in a PC browser, but the card is read with a phone, so starting on the phone saves switching devices.
    3. Open the app and tap 「新規登録」 on the top screen. The 「会員登録」 page opens in your browser.
    4. Leave the 「個人のお客さま」 tab selected (not 「法人のお客さま」) and enter an email address only you use. Zaif allows one account per person.
    5. Open and read the four linked documents (「書面の電子交付」, 「Zaifの利用規約」, 「契約締結前交付書面」 and 「プライバシーポリシー」), tick 「上記、すべてに同意します」 and tap 「登録する」. A 6-digit code is emailed to you.
  2. 2

Enter the code and set a password

Enter the code from the email and set a password rated "strong" or better.

    1. Find the 6-digit code in the email from Zaif ([email protected]). If it isn't there, check your spam folder and any domain filtering on your mail.
    2. Type the digits into the six boxes on 「認証コードの入力」 and tap 「認証する」. If no code arrived, use 「認証コードを再送」 to get a new one.
    3. On 「パスワード設定」, type a password and make it longer or mix in more character types until the strength meter reads 「強い」 or better. Enter it again in the confirmation box and tap 「設定する」.
    4. Don't reuse a password from another exchange or service, or anything guessable such as your birthday.
    5. When 「アカウント登録が完了しました」 appears, tap 「次へ」. At this point you only have a login; deposits and trading need the account application that follows (ID check and personal details).

Tip If the email doesn't arrive, check your spam folder and allow mail from [email protected].

  3. 3

Verify with your My Number card

Tap "start ID check", install the TRUSTDOCK app and read your My Number card with your phone, entering the signature certificate password. Check the name, date of birth, gender and address read from the card and tick to confirm.

    1. On 「本人確認を行います」, make sure the card is at hand and you know its password, then tap 「本人確認を開始する」.
    2. On 「TRUSTDOCKアプリから提出」, tap 「TRUSTDOCKアプリを開く」. If the app isn't installed you're taken to the app store; install TRUSTDOCK (by TRUSTDOCK Inc.) and tap the button again. On a PC, follow the 「この端末がPCの方はこちら」 link instead.
    3. Follow the TRUSTDOCK prompts: enter the signature-certificate password, then hold the card against the phone so it can read the chip. Only your name, date of birth, gender and address are read; the 12-digit My Number itself isn't submitted.
    4. When 「必要な個人情報の提出が完了しました」 appears, tap 「完了」 and return to Zaif. If the page doesn't move on, reload it.
    5. Wrong entries lock the password (five in total for the signature certificate). If you've forgotten it, don't guess: reset it at the city office where you're registered, or, if you know the 4-digit user PIN, with the smartphone app and a convenience-store kiosk.
    6. Errors can happen because of the connection or maintenance; wait a little and try again. The screen also has a 「マイナンバーカードを持っていない」 link, but Zaif's guide doesn't explain that route, so without a card ask through the contact form before applying.

Tip If you've forgotten the password, it has to be reset (see Mynaportal). The screen also has an "I don't have a My Number card" link, but the official guide doesn't explain that route.

  4. 4

    Enter your basic information

Enter your tax-residence country, the reading of your name and more, then income, financial assets, occupation, purpose, stock and crypto experience, and whether you're an insider.

    1. 「本人情報の確認」 shows the name, date of birth, gender and address read from the card. If they're right, tick 「お客様の本人情報と、ご登録内容に相違がないことを確認しました」 and tap 「次へ」.
    2. On 「基本情報の入力 (1)」 the registration type is fixed to 「個人」. The tax-residence field (居住地国) defaults to 「日本」; leave it if you only pay tax in Japan. Another country requires your taxpayer number, and if it differs from the country of your address you must give the reason.
    3. Your name is filled in from the card. Complete the reading (フリガナ) and the remaining fields exactly as on your ID, then continue.
    4. On 「基本情報の入力 (2)」, pick your income, financial assets, occupation and purpose from the lists, and answer 「はい」 or 「いいえ」 for stock and crypto trading experience. Choosing 「その他」 for occupation or purpose means typing the details.
    5. 「情報取得者に該当しません」 is worded in the negative, so if you aren't an insider the answer is 「はい」. Choose 「いいえ」 if you could know non-public, price-moving information, for example as an officer or employee of a coin issuer or exchange.
    6. Answer everything truthfully. Overstating gives no advantage, and false details can get your registration refused. Leaving occupation or purpose blank later costs a ¥250 monthly account fee.

Tip See "Application questions explained" below for what each question means.

  5. 5

    Tick the declarations and apply

Confirm you are not linked to organised crime, not a US citizen and not a foreign PEP, and that you won't trade in connection with sanctions or illegal activity, then tap Apply.

    1. 「お客様への確認事項」 lists five statements: you are not linked to organised crime; you are not a US citizen (US nationality or green card); you are not a foreign PEP; you won't trade in connection with economic sanctions; and you won't trade in connection with illegal activity or crime.
    2. If an item is unclear, read the explanation behind the links next to it (「FATCAについて」, 「外国PEPsについて」, 「経済制裁に関する取引について」).
    3. Tick 「上記の内容に相違がないことを確認しました」 and tap 「申し込む」 only if every statement is true for you. If even one isn't, Zaif can't open an account for you.
    4. To correct an earlier answer, go back with 「戻る」 before you apply.
    5. 「口座開設の申し込みが完了しました」 confirms the application. You can go straight to 2-step verification from this screen.
  6. 6

    Review

Approval can come within seconds or the same day, but it can take a few days. The result arrives by email.

    1. Zaif reviews the application. With the card check and nothing to fix it can take seconds to the same day, but, as the completion screen says, anywhere from minutes to a few days.
    2. The result comes by email. Make sure mail from [email protected] can reach you, and check your spam folder.
    3. Zaif's trading-start standards require that you can be reached by email and phone and can submit a selfie if asked. Applicants aged 75–79 may get a phone interview.
    4. While you wait you can already set up 2-step verification (next step); it's required before you can trade.
    5. Even if it's slow, don't apply again with another email address (one account per person). Ask through the contact form instead.
  7. 7

    Set up 2-step verification

Link an authenticator app such as Google Authenticator. 2-step verification is mandatory before you can trade.

    1. Install an authenticator app such as Google Authenticator on your phone.
    2. Tap 「2段階認証を設定する」 on the completion screen, or in a browser open 「アカウント」 (top right) and then 「二段階認証」.
    3. Scan the QR code under 「2. 2段階認証アプリにZaifの設定を読み込ませる」 with the authenticator. If you're on the same phone or can't scan it, tap 「URI」 to add the account.
    4. Type the 6-digit token shown in the app into the form and press 「確認」. Adding the account to the app alone doesn't complete setup. The number changes at set intervals, so avoid entering it just before it switches.
    5. 「2段階認証の設定を有効化しました」 means it's done. Login, yen withdrawals, crypto sends and API key management always need a code; other actions can be added as options.
    6. Issue backup codes in case you're ever locked out, and keep them where no one else can see them. If codes are rejected, set your phone's clock to automatic.

Tip If codes are rejected, set your phone's clock to automatic.

  8. 8

    Deposit yen

Choose bank transfer (you pay your bank's fee), convenience-store or Pay-easy deposit (¥495 under ¥30,000, ¥605 above) or Zaif card payment (3.5% of the amount).

    1. In the app tap 「入金」 (top right), then 「銀行振込」. In a browser choose yen under 「入出金と履歴」 on the 「アカウント」 page, pick 「銀行振込による入金」, enter the amount and press 「入金開始」.
    2. Zaif's bank account and your designated sender name (an ID code plus your name) are shown; the name has a copy button.
    3. Make the transfer from your own bank with the sender name changed to exactly that format (how to change it depends on your bank). You pay the transfer fee.
    4. During bank hours, with the name and code matching, it's credited automatically; transfers outside those hours are credited the next bank business day. If nothing arrives within one bank business day, contact Zaif through the form (Zaif won't contact you first).
    5. Other options: convenience store (up to ¥299,000 per payment; fee ¥495 or ¥605, plus ¥200 stamp duty from ¥50,000), Pay-easy (up to ¥9,990,000; fee ¥495 or ¥605) and the Zaif card (3.5% of the amount, up to ¥100,000 a month).
    6. Be aware of the withdrawal limits tied to deposits: for a week after your first deposit, withdrawals are capped at ¥10,000 equivalent a day. Pay-easy amounts must stay for a week, about half of a convenience-store deposit for a week, and card deposits for 15 days.

Tip For bank transfers, use the sender name shown on screen (ID code + your name). Other formats aren't credited automatically.

Application questions explained

What each question means and how to answer it accurately. Always answer truthfully. Answers that don't match reality lead to rejection or a frozen account.

Country of residence for tax purposes
What it means
The country where you pay income tax. Since Jan 2026 crypto traders must declare it to their exchange (CARF); at Zaif, your basic information counts as that declaration.
How to answer
If you only pay tax in Japan, leave the default "Japan". Otherwise you must register your taxpayer number, and if your tax country differs from the country you live in, give the reason.

Official explanation

Annual income
What it means
A required item under the anti-money-laundering law, used to judge whether trading is within your means.
How to answer
Choose your approximate pre-tax income from the list. If it's low, choose it as it is. Overstating gives no advantage, and Zaif's terms allow it to refuse registration if any details are false.
Financial assets
What it means
Total savings, stocks, funds and similar. Real estate is normally not included.
How to answer
Choose the approximate total in your own name (not your family's). It's mandatory: accounts without it face trading limits by the end of 2026.

Official explanation

Occupation and purpose
What it means
Required under the anti-money-laundering law: who you are and what you'll use the account for.
How to answer
Choose your current occupation and real purpose. If you pick "other", you must add details. Leaving them blank costs a ¥250 monthly account fee.

Official explanation

Do you have stock trading experience? / crypto trading experience?
What it means
Checks whether you understand the risks.
How to answer
Answer yes or no truthfully; with no experience, answer "no". Claiming experience you don't have gives no advantage.

Do you have stock trading experience? / crypto trading experience?

  • Yes はい
  • No いいえ
Answer choices as listed on the official form. Pick the one that is true for you.
"I am not an insider" (yes / no)
What it means
Whether you could know non-public, price-moving information about coins Zaif lists or about Zaif itself, e.g. as an officer or employee of a coin issuer or exchange.
How to answer
The statement is "I am not", so if you're not an insider, answer "yes". If you are one, answer "no" honestly (Zaif may refuse registration to insiders).

"I am not an insider" (yes / no)

  • Yes (I am not an insider) はい
  • No (I am an insider) いいえ
Answer choices as listed on the official form. Pick the one that is true for you.
Customer declarations
What it means
Confirms you are not linked to organised crime, not a US citizen or green-card holder, not a foreign PEP, and won't trade in connection with sanctions, illegal activity or crime.
How to answer
Tick "I confirm the above is correct" only if it all is. US citizens and foreign PEPs (or their family) cannot use Zaif.

Tips for a smooth signup

  • Before applying, check your My Number card's signature certificate password (6–16 letters and numbers). Without a My Number card, ask Zaif's support form about the process first, or consider an exchange with other ID options.
  • Finish the ID check once you start. An unverified account has a monthly maintenance fee taken from its balance.
  • For BTC and ETH, the order book ("Orderbook trading") is cheaper than the sales desk.
  • If you're 75–79, Zaif may call you for an interview, so make sure you can take calls on your registered number.

Recent changes

  • Guide published, reflecting that new accounts since 29 Jun 2026 verify with a My Number card (JPKI) only, and the end of margin trading on 5 Aug 2026.
