Key facts
Account activation
As fast as 5 min
SBI VC Trade says an account can be ready in as little as 5 minutes with its "Open an account with My Number" app, which reads your My Number card's IC chip on an NFC phone (no face photo; not available to foreign nationals or if the card certificate shows a former surname or an alphabet name). On the web route with the smartphone photo ID check, the result email arrives from the same day at the earliest and usually within 1–2 business days. Individuals get nothing by post and can trade as soon as the approval email arrives.

First crypto send-out
SBI VC Trade publishes no waiting period that applies only to new accounts. Once the account is open, you register the destination address with the Travel Rule details (confirmed with an SMS 2-step code) and book the send; bookings made by 10:00 on a weekday are in principle sent by the next bank business day. Because assets equal to each quick deposit are held for 7 days, crypto bought with freshly deposited yen can't be sent out straight away.
Protections against fraud
- As an anti-money-laundering and anti-fraud measure, assets equal to each quick deposit can't be withdrawn or sent out for 7 days including the deposit day (released at 7:00 on the 8th day). Another deposit within that time starts a new 7 days for that amount. Trading, recurring buys and incoming transfers are unaffected.
- As a security measure, you may be asked to submit an ID document when registering a destination address (error SA-25071). The address can't be registered until that review is finished (since 10 July 2026).
- Every send booking triggers a confirmation email, and the booking is only completed if you open the link in it within 30 minutes.
- To comply with Japan's foreign exchange law, you may be asked for details depending on the transfer purpose (e.g. import payments or "other") or the recipient, and the send waits until the check is complete. Without an answer, or depending on it, the send can be refused.
Transfer rules
- Sending to your own (private) wallet
- Allowed
- What's required (Travel Rule)
- You can send to a wallet you control yourself, such as MetaMask. Each destination address must be registered first: under the Travel Rule you enter the recipient (yourself or someone else, name in kanji and the Latin alphabet, plus the address if it's someone else), the destination (an exchange from the list, or "other" with its name), the destination's country (your own country for a personal wallet) and the purpose, then confirm with an SMS code.
- Destinations you can't send to
- The terms prohibit sending crypto to, or receiving it from, gambling services including online casinos, directly or indirectly. ETH and ERC-20 tokens move only on the Ethereum main chain; layer-2 networks, sidechains and smart-contract addresses are not supported for sends.
Terms & conditions
- 18 or older (you must be an adult; 18-year-olds have been able to apply since April 2022)
- No upper age limit. But the terms say that if you are 75 or older when you open the account, you are in principle limited to spot trading and related services, with no leverage or other derivatives
- Individuals living in Japan. Foreign nationals must submit a residence card or special permanent resident certificate
- One account per person, for the account holder's own use only (family members may not use it)
- You must submit your My Number after the account opens (a legal requirement). Since 30 Sep 2026 it is also required before you can use leverage trading
- No account opening or maintenance fees
Restrictions
- Foreign politically exposed persons (PEPs) and anyone linked to organised crime cannot open an account
- Yen deposits are basically by "Quick deposit" only (bank transfer is a special option for ¥5 million or more). Japan Post Bank, Mizuho, Rakuten Bank, SBI Shinsei and some others are not supported
- An amount equal to each quick deposit can't be withdrawn or sent out for 7 days
- Only a driver's licence, My Number card, residence card or special permanent resident certificate showing your current address is accepted (no health insurance card, passport or driving history certificate)
- Only 8 coins trade on the order book; the rest are sales-desk only, where the spread is the real cost
- APT, ETC and OAS are being delisted (buying ended on 7 Oct 2026; selling closes at 13:00 on 28 Oct)
How to open an account
-
1
Register your email
On the official signup page, choose "Individual", enter your email address and press the register button.
- Have ready: an ID showing your current address (driver's licence, My Number card, residence card or special permanent resident certificate), a phone that can receive an SMS or a call, and the details of a Japanese bank account in your own name. Foreign nationals must use a residence card or special permanent resident certificate.
- Open the signup page from 「口座開設」 (open an account) at the top right of the official site and choose 「個人」 (individual).
- Enter the email address you'll log in with and press 「メールアドレスで登録」. A provisional-registration email is sent to that address.
- If you see 「メールの送信に失敗しました」 (sending failed), the address may already be registered. Try logging in, or register with a different address.
- If no email arrives, check your spam folder and make sure mail from @sbivc.co.jp or mail containing links isn't blocked. After changing the setting, start again from the beginning.
- Japanese nationals with a My Number card and an NFC phone can apply through the "Open an account with My Number" app instead of the web (no face photo, and some fields such as name and address are filled in for you). It can't be used if you've already applied on the web, or if the card certificate shows a former surname or an alphabet name.
Tip With a My Number card and an NFC phone, the "Open an account with My Number" app skips the face photo and can finish in about 5 minutes (not available to foreign nationals, or if the name on your card's certificate includes a former surname or alphabet name).

2
Set a password and accept the terms
Open the link in the provisional-registration email, set a password (8–20 characters using at least three of lowercase, uppercase, numbers and symbols) and accept the terms.
- Open the link in the provisional-registration email.
- Choose a login password: 8–20 single-byte characters using at least three of lowercase letters, uppercase letters, numbers and symbols. Type the same password again in the confirmation box.
- Read the terms and conditions, tick 「同意します」 (I agree) and press 「登録」 to finish the provisional registration.
- Next, choose how to apply (「Webでお申込み」 to continue on the web). Enter a referral code if you have one, or press 「スキップ」 (skip).
-
3
Verify your phone number
Enter your phone number, choose SMS or a voice call (an automated voice reads out the code), then enter the code.
- Enter your phone number, pick 「SMS認証」 (SMS) or 「電話認証」 (voice call) and press 「登録」. Choose the voice call for a landline.
- With SMS, the code arrives as a text message. With a voice call, answer the incoming call and an automated voice reads out the code.
- Enter the code on the next screen and press 「認証する」 (verify) to move on to the details form.
- If no code arrives, check the number you typed, and try the voice call if SMS doesn't work. If you see 「認証コードを送信できませんでした」 (code could not be sent), the number may already be registered.
Tip Choose the voice call if you're using a landline.

4
Enter your details
Fill in your name, address, date of birth, investment experience, payout bank account and so on, then confirm.
- Enter your name (kanji, katakana reading and Latin alphabet), date of birth, gender and nationality. Foreign nationals also enter their period of stay and related details.
- For your address, enter the postcode and use the address search, then add the block number, building and room exactly as on your ID. If your ID still shows an old address, update the ID first.
- Choose your occupation (plus your industry if you're self-employed or a company officer), annual income, financial assets, investment experience (years and types), main purpose and how you heard about SBI VC Trade. Income and assets matter in the review, so pick the bands that match your own actual figures.
- Say whether you're in a position to obtain inside information (for example, working for a token issuer or a crypto exchange). If so, also select the coins concerned.
- Register a Japanese bank account in your own name for withdrawals (bank, branch, account type, number and holder name). Family members' accounts can't be used.
- Read the declarations (that you have no country of residence other than Japan, are not a foreign PEP and have no links to organised crime) and tick them only if they are true for you. If one isn't, don't tick it; contact support instead.
- Opening an SBI Web3 Wallet at the same time is optional. When you're done, press 「次の画面へ」 (next), check everything on the confirmation screen and press 「登録する」 (register).
Tip Your address must match the current address on your ID. See "Application questions explained" below for what each question means.

Smartphone ID check
Photograph your ID from the front, at an angle (to show its thickness) and from the back (My Number card: front and angle only), then take a selfie and complete a real-time liveness check.
- On your smartphone, choose the ID you'll submit (driver's licence, My Number card, residence card or special permanent resident certificate) and press 「撮影画面へ」 (go to camera).
- Photograph the front of the ID, then an angled shot that shows its thickness, then the back. For a My Number card, take only the front and the angled shot; don't photograph the back.
- Next, take a selfie, then follow the on-screen prompts in the real-time check by moving your face. This confirms you're not using a pre-recorded photo or video.
- Tips: always use the original, shoot somewhere bright without glare or shadows, and keep the whole card in the frame. Photos of copies, or blurry, cropped or tiny images, will have to be redone.
- Expired IDs, or IDs that don't show your current address, can't be used.
- Press 「完了」 (done) on the final screen. An email confirming your application arrives at your registered address.
Tip Photograph the original. Photos of copies, or blurry or cropped images, will have to be resubmitted.

Review, then start trading
Review takes from the same day, usually 1–2 business days. The result comes by email, and individuals can start trading right away with nothing sent by post.
- The result comes by email: the same day at the earliest and usually within 1–2 business days according to the official guide, longer when applications are busy or a document has a problem.
- To check that your application went through, log in to the account page (account.sbivc.co.jp); it should say 「ただいま審査中です」 (under review).
- The review criteria and reasons for a refusal are not disclosed. If something in your details needs checking, they may contact you by email or phone.
- Individuals don't need to receive anything by post and can trade as soon as the approval email arrives. Log in with your email address (or account number) and password.
- 2-step verification is mandatory at login. Set up an authenticator app such as Google Authenticator, or SMS (in the browser's simple mode: 「設定」 → 「2要素認証の設定」). You can also register a passkey that uses your phone's biometrics.
Tip 2-step verification at login is mandatory (authenticator app or SMS; otherwise a code by email). Passkey login is also supported.

7
Submit your My Number
After the account opens, submit your My Number from My Page. Registration can take a few days.
- After your account opens, log in to My Page (account.sbivc.co.jp) and open the My Number registration. It's a legal requirement: you submit the number and images of the supporting document.
- If your registered address differs from the address on your My Number document, change your registered address first and then apply.
- Registration takes a few days. If anything is missing or needs checking, they will contact you individually.
- Since 30 September 2026, leverage trading can't be used until your My Number is registered. If a registration prompt appears in the trading tool or app, you can also start from there.
Tip If your registered address differs from the one on your My Number document, update your address first.

Deposit yen and buy
Choose Quick deposit under deposits and withdrawals and pay through your online banking. It's free and credited instantly, 24/7 including weekends and holidays.
- Log in to the app, tap 「入出金」 (deposit/withdraw) at the bottom right, enter the amount and choose the bank you'll pay from (on a PC, use 「入出金」 in simple mode).
- Tick the box agreeing that assets equal to the deposit can't be moved out for 7 days, then tap 「金融機関サイトへ」 (go to bank), log in to your online banking and make the payment. The payee is filled in automatically, so never pay by reusing a past transfer from your bank history.
- After paying, always press the bank site's button such as 「加盟店に戻る」 (return to merchant) or 「閉じる」 (close). If all went well, the money is credited almost immediately (free, 24/7 including weekends).
- Mizuho, Japan Post Bank, Rakuten Bank, Chugoku Bank and SBI Shinsei Bank can't be used for Quick deposit. Always pay from an account in your own name. For ¥5 million or more, the special bank-transfer deposit service is also available.
- To buy: pick a coin in the app and tap 「買う」 (buy). For a market order, enter an amount (or quantity), tap 「注文する」 (order), then 「注文する」 again on the confirmation screen. Limit and stop orders are also available. For the 8 coins on the order book, buying there is often cheaper.
- Assets equal to the deposited amount can't be withdrawn or sent out for 7 days (released at 7:00 on the 8th day).
Tip The deposited amount can't be withdrawn or sent out for 7 days. Japan Post Bank, Mizuho, Rakuten Bank and some others don't work with Quick deposit, so have online banking at a supported bank ready.
Application questions explained
What each question means and how to answer it accurately. Always answer truthfully. Answers that don't match reality lead to rejection or a frozen account.
Purpose of investing/trading
- What it means
- Required under Japan's anti-money-laundering law: what you will use the account for.
- How to answer
- Choose the option that matches your real purpose. No option counts against you by itself. Note that using leverage trading requires registering your My Number.
Purpose of investing/trading
Occupation
- What it means
- Used for identity checks and to judge whether your trading matches your circumstances.
- How to answer
- Pick your current occupation as it is. Students, homemakers, retirees and the unemployed should pick the option that applies.
Occupation
Annual income and financial assets
- What it means
- Helps judge whether your trading is within your means. Income is pre-tax; financial assets means savings, stocks, funds and similar, not real estate.
- How to answer
- Choose honest approximate amounts in your own name (not your family's). If you have no income, the lowest band is fine. Overstating gives no advantage and can trigger follow-up checks later.
Annual income and financial assets
Investment experience
- What it means
- Checks whether you understand the risks, based on your past investing and trading.
- How to answer
- "None" is fine if you have no experience; beginners can apply. Overstating experience gives no advantage and only leads to products that don't fit you.
Are you a foreign politically exposed person (PEP)?
- What it means
- Covers foreign heads of state and people who hold or held posts equivalent to minister, deputy minister, speaker or deputy speaker of parliament, supreme court judge, ambassador, chief of staff of the armed forces or central bank officer, plus their families. Japanese politicians are not included.
- How to answer
- Most people answer "No". If you are a foreign PEP, SBI VC Trade cannot open an account for you.
Payout bank account
- What it means
- Where your yen withdrawals are sent. It must be an account in your own name at a financial institution in Japan.
- How to answer
- Register an account in your own name accurately. Family members' accounts can't be used.
Tips for a smooth signup
- With a My Number card and an NFC smartphone, the "Open an account with My Number" app is fastest, and no face photo is needed.
- Deposits are basically by Quick deposit only. Japan Post Bank, Mizuho, Rakuten Bank and some others aren't supported, so set up online banking at a supported bank first.
- For the 8 coins on the order book, buying there is cheaper (maker fee −0.01%). The sales desk charges no fee, but the buy/sell spread is the real cost.
- If you get stuck, book a phone callback on the official site (calls back 10:00–17:00 on weekdays) or use the staffed chat (weekdays 10:00–17:00).
