As fast as 1 hour
OSL Japan says an account can open in as little as 1 hour with the smartphone eKYC check (ID photos, a face photo and a short face video); the application itself can take as little as 5 minutes. The document-upload route with a postcard takes at least 2 business days, and review can take several days.

First crypto send-out
OSL Japan publishes no waiting period for new accounts. Once your account is open and an address is registered, you can request a crypto withdrawal (the withdrawal screen asks for a 6-digit Google Authenticator code, so 2-step verification must be on). Requests are accepted 24/7 and processed on bank business days: weekday requests from 0:00 to 11:59 usually go the same day, 12:00–23:59 the next bank business day, and weekend or holiday requests on the second bank business day.
Protections against fraud
- Anti-money-laundering reviews can delay a withdrawal, depending on the amount.
- Withdrawals to an exchange don't leave until the Travel Rule notice is complete, and a request can be cancelled depending on the details notified.
- Transfers with unhosted wallets (private wallets, businesses outside the notification scheme and the like) may be delayed.
- Under the terms, a withdrawal that raises questions under the law or OSL's rules can be held or cancelled, and deposits, withdrawals and other dealings can be restricted if you don't answer OSL's checks by the deadline.
- No withdrawals can be requested during maintenance every Thursday 12:00–14:00.
Transfer rules
- Sending to your own (private) wallet
- Allowed
- What's required (Travel Rule)
- Each withdrawal address is registered with a label (required) and Travel Rule details: whether the recipient is you, the recipient's name (or company name) and address in the alphabet, the destination (an exchange, or 「上記以外」 such as a private wallet) and the purpose. Your own name in the alphabet must be registered too. At withdrawal you confirm it isn't sanctions-related and enter a Google Authenticator code.
- Destinations you can't send to
- Because they use a different notification system, you can't send directly to bitFlyer, Coincheck, Crypto Garage or some overseas exchanges (official FAQ, as of 1 Jun 2023). The withdrawal screen also warns that even listed exchanges may not be reachable.
Terms & conditions
- Ages 18 to 74 with full legal capacity (no accounts if you are under 18 or 75+ when applying)
- Individuals who live in Japan and have a Japanese resident record (foreign nationals can apply with a residence card or special permanent resident certificate)
- One account per person; you can't open one in a family member's name
- You need your own mobile number (for SMS verification) and your own email address
- The terms require you to trade only with surplus funds, not borrowed money or money you need to live on
- Anyone opening an account from 1 Jan 2026 must declare their tax residence country(ies) under CARF
- No account opening or maintenance fees
Restrictions
- Foreign politically exposed persons (PEPs) cannot open an account
- US citizens and US residents cannot apply; you must confirm you are neither when signing up
- The order-book exchange has been suspended since 28 Oct 2022, so trading is sales desk only. There's no fee, but the buy/sell spread is the real cost
- You can't swap one coin for another; sell for yen first, then buy
- JPY withdrawals cost ¥440 each (tax incl.); crypto withdrawals carry a per-coin fee (0.0004 BTC for Bitcoin)
- Because of Travel Rule system differences, you can't send directly to bitFlyer, Coincheck, Crypto Garage and some others (official FAQ, as of 1 Jun 2023)
- Phone is only for large trades; general questions go through the web form (accepted 24/7)
How to open an account
-
1
Register your email
On the account opening screen of the official site or app, enter your email, tap "Get verification code" and enter the code from the email.
- Check the conditions first: aged 18–74 when applying, living in Japan with a Japanese resident record, and your own email address and SMS-capable mobile number. For the fastest route, have one eKYC document ready: a driver's licence, My Number card or driving history certificate.
- Open the account-opening (sign-up) page from OSL Japan's website or app and enter your email address.
- Press 「認証コード取得」 and a 6-digit code is sent to that address. Enter it in the code field.
- If it doesn't arrive, check your spam folder; busy mail servers can also delay it for a while.
- The friend-referral code field is optional; leave it blank if you weren't referred.
Tip Check your spam folder too.

Set a password and choose "Individual"
Set a password (8–32 half-width characters using at least three of: upper case, lower case, digits, symbols), choose "Individual" as the account type and tap "Next".
- Choose a password of 8–32 half-width characters using at least three of: upper case, lower case, digits and symbols (!@#$%^&* etc.), and type it again in 「パスワードの再入力」.
- Choose 「個人」 as the account type. Individual accounts are for people who live in Japan and have a Japanese resident record.
- Open and read the listed documents (rules on electronic delivery, the key-facts statement for crypto trading, the privacy policy, the anti-organised-crime policy, the anti-money-laundering policy and so on) and tick to agree.
- Tick 「私は、米国市民(米国籍保有者)又は米国居住者ではありません。」 only if it's true. US citizens and US residents can't open an account at OSL Japan.
- Press 「次へ」 to move on to your personal details. Ten wrong passwords at login lock the account and force a reset via 「パスワードを忘れた場合」, so keep it safe.
Tip Individual accounts are for people who live in Japan and have a Japanese resident record.

3
Enter your personal details
Enter your name and its katakana reading, date of birth, address, phone number, nationality and so on. Enter your name, address and date of birth exactly as on your ID document.
- Enter your name, the katakana reading of your family and given names, date of birth (pick year, month and day), gender and nationality. Name and date of birth must match your ID.
- Type the katakana in full-width characters exactly as your bank account name; a mismatch causes errors with yen deposits and withdrawals.
- Enter the postal code, then the street number; add the building and room only if applicable. It must be your current address as shown on your ID. A warning appears if it doesn't match the postal-code lookup, so recheck before continuing.
- For the phone number, enter your own mobile number that can receive SMS.
- Select your tax residence (CARF): 「日本のみ」 if you only pay tax in Japan, or 「外国の居住地国を含む」 if you also owe tax elsewhere, then enter that country's taxpayer number and other details.
- If your date of birth shows you're under 18 or 75 or older, the form won't let you continue.
Tip Enter the katakana reading exactly as your bank account name, in full-width characters.
-
4
Enter financial information and investment experience
Choose your occupation, income and financial assets, and your experience with crypto, stocks, FX and so on, then tap "Next".
- Choose your occupation. Options include part-time or agency work, homemaker, pensioner, student and unemployed; if none fits, choose 「その他」 and type it in.
- Pick your annual income (8 bands from under ¥1 million to ¥100 million+) and financial assets (10 bands from under ¥100,000 to ¥100 million+), using approximate figures in your own name.
- If asked whether the money you'll invest is your own (「はい」 or 「いいえ」), answer truthfully; the terms require trading with spare money, not borrowed money or living funds.
- Choose your investment purpose (medium- to long-term investing, gains from price moves, diversification, remittance or payments and so on) and how you came to OSL Japan (internet, a friend's referral, an exhibition or seminar, etc.).
- For crypto, stocks, margin trading, futures, FX and CFDs, pick 「経験なし」, 「1年未満」, 「1~5年」 or 「5年以上」, then press 「次へ」. 「経験なし」 is fine if that's the truth.
- Review your answers on the confirmation screen before sending. Overstating anything gives no advantage.
Tip See "Application questions explained" below for what each question means.
-
5
Verify your identity with eKYC
Choose "eKYC" and photograph one ID — driver's licence, My Number card or driving history certificate (foreign nationals: residence card or special permanent resident certificate) — from the front, at an angle and from the back. Then take a face photo and a short face video for the real-time check.
- Choose 「eKYC本人確認」 and press 「eKYCで本人確認へ」. If you applied on a PC, scan the QR code shown with your phone to continue. eKYC works on smartphones only (iOS 12+ or Android 8+, not tablets).
- Press 「本人確認を始める」 and select the same type of document you're about to photograph: a driver's licence, My Number card or driving history certificate (valid when submitted) for Japanese nationals, or a residence card or special permanent resident certificate (3+ months left) for foreign nationals.
- Press 「次へ進む」 and photograph the document's front, an angled view and the back, following the on-screen guide.
- Press 「撮影を始める」 to take a front-facing face photo, then press it again to record the short face video for the real-time check.
- To avoid the 「照合できない」 face-match error: keep hair and hats off your eyes, remove strong glasses and masks, avoid places that are too dark or too bright, and keep posters or other faces out of the background. Photograph the document clean, sharp and without glare.
- If eKYC won't work on your phone, use 「本人確認書類を提出」 (next step) instead.
Tip eKYC works on smartphones only (not tablets). If you applied on a PC, scan the QR code shown on screen to continue on your phone.

If you choose the postal ID check
If you choose "Submit ID documents", upload two ID documents (or one plus a supporting document) and an ID selfie. After review, a registered postcard arrives; enter its code to finish.
- Choose 「本人確認書類を提出」 and press 「本人確認書類を提出、郵送ハガキで本人確認へ」.
- Japanese nationals submit two type-A documents (plus an optional ID selfie), or one type-A document with its ID selfie plus one type-B document. Type A: driver's licence, driving history certificate (issued from 1 Apr 2012), passport applied for before 4 Feb 2020 (photo page and address page), Basic Resident Register card, or My Number card (front only).
- Type B, issued within 3 months: residence record or seal registration certificate (with issue date and official seal), electricity or water bill, tax notice, or social insurance receipt. Foreign nationals submit a residence card or special permanent resident certificate (3+ months left) plus one type-B document and an ID selfie. Health insurance cards haven't been accepted since 20 Nov 2025.
- An ID selfie is one photo showing your face and the document together, with the document legible. Photograph the originals (no copies), whole and in focus, and upload JPG or PNG files of up to 10MB each. Your documents must show your current address.
- After review, a postcard with an authentication code comes by registered mail (non-forwardable) to your registered address; delivery times can't be chosen. If you're out, arrange redelivery from the notice; if it goes back to OSL Japan, they'll contact you to resend it.
- Once it arrives, log in and enter the code under 「ご本人確認」 in 「アカウント」; deposits and trading then open up. (Even without the code, the account opens automatically some time after delivery.)
Tip The postcard comes by registered mail that can't be forwarded or scheduled. Health insurance cards have not been accepted as ID since 20 Nov 2025.

Get the review result by email
Your application is reviewed and the result is emailed to you. With eKYC an account can open in as little as 1 hour; with the postal route, in as little as 2 business days.
- Applications are reviewed in the order received, and the result goes to your registered email address. The detailed criteria aren't published.
- With eKYC an account can open in as little as 1 hour, and with uploaded documents in as little as 2 business days, but document problems or postal delays can stretch this to several days or more.
- If something in your details was wrong, you'll see 「個人情報の再提出」; check the details, correct them and submit again.
- Once open, set up 2-step verification with Google Authenticator. OSL Japan recommends it, and the crypto withdrawal screen asks for its code.
- Foreign nationals: if the residence card or certificate you submitted expires, trading, deposits and withdrawals are restricted. You'll get an email as the expiry nears; submit the renewed document.
Tip Review can take a few days. Once the account is open, set up 2-step verification (Google Authenticator).

Deposit yen and buy
Transfer yen from a bank account in your own name to the dedicated account shown on the "JPY deposit" screen. Once it arrives, buy on the sales desk.
- Open 「日本円入金」 under 「アカウント」 to see your own dedicated bank account for transfers (bank name and account number).
- Transfer from a bank account in your own name. A transfer in another name isn't credited even if the bank processes it; the sender has to recall it (and pays the recall fee). You also pay the transfer fee, and cards or foreign currency can't be used.
- Deposits are credited almost instantly 24/7 except during maintenance, though the cut-off for same-day crediting depends on the sending bank. There's no upper limit on deposits.
- On the sales desk, pick a coin, enter the quantity or amount and buy. Minimums are e.g. 0.00005 BTC or 0.001 ETH, and the per-order cap is e.g. 2 BTC. Coins can't be swapped directly, so sell for yen first if you want a different one.
- Every Thursday 12:00–14:00 is scheduled maintenance, when you can't trade, deposit or withdraw.
Tip Transfers from someone else's account are not credited. You pay your bank's transfer fee.
Application questions explained
What each question means and how to answer it accurately. Always answer truthfully. Answers that don't match reality lead to rejection or a frozen account.
Occupation
- What it means
- Used for identity checks and to judge whether your trading matches your circumstances.
- How to answer
- Pick your current occupation as it is. There are options for part-time or agency work, homemakers, pensioners, students and the unemployed, so choose whichever honestly applies. If none fits, choose "Other" and type your occupation.
Occupation
Annual income
- What it means
- Helps the exchange judge whether your trading is within your means.
- How to answer
- Choose your approximate pre-tax income. If you have no income, choose the lowest band; that's fine. Overstating gives no advantage and can trigger follow-up checks later.
Annual income
Financial assets
- What it means
- Total savings, stocks, funds and similar. Real estate is normally not included.
- How to answer
- Choose the approximate total in your own name (not your family's). A small amount is fine; just answer honestly.
Financial assets
Purpose of trading
- What it means
- Required under Japan's anti-money-laundering law: what you will use the account for.
- How to answer
- Choose your real purpose, such as medium- to long-term investing or profiting from price moves. No option is "wrong" by itself.
How you came to trade with OSL Japan
- What it means
- Asks how you came to use the service.
- How to answer
- Pick the real reason (internet, a friend's referral, an exhibition or seminar, etc.).
Investment experience (crypto, stocks, margin trading, futures, FX, CFDs)
- What it means
- For each product you choose how long you have traded it, so the exchange can check you understand the risks.
- How to answer
- "None" is fine if you have no experience. Separately, understanding how crypto works and its risks is a condition for opening an account, so read the risk documents before applying.
Investment experience (crypto, stocks, margin trading, futures, FX, CFDs)
Confirmation that you are not a US citizen or US resident
- What it means
- OSL Japan does not accept US citizens or US residents, and asks you to confirm this when you sign up.
- How to answer
- Read it and agree if it's true for you. US citizens and US residents cannot open an account at OSL Japan.
Tax residence country
- What it means
- A filing for the international tax information exchange (CARF) that began on 1 Jan 2026. Every new account needs it.
- How to answer
- If you only pay tax in Japan, choose "Japan only". If you also owe tax in another country, choose "Includes a foreign country" and enter that country's taxpayer number and other details.

Tips for a smooth signup
- Choose eKYC on your smartphone for the fastest route (as little as 1 hour). The postal route needs a postcard and takes at least 2 business days.
- Applications are accepted only up to age 74. If you're 75 or older, consider exchanges with no upper age limit, such as bitFlyer, bitbank or GMO Coin.
- Crypto withdrawals are processed on bank business days: weekday requests before 12:00 usually go out the same day, later ones the next business day, and weekend or holiday requests on the second business day.
- Before sending to another exchange or your own wallet, double-check the address and that the destination is supported. Crypto sent to a wrong address can't be recovered.
- Every Thursday 12:00–14:00 is scheduled maintenance, when you can't trade, deposit or withdraw.
