Key facts
Realistic timeline
-
Start
Apply
You send the application and the ID check.
-
Account ready
No set time published
Review takes 1–2 business days; how long the registered letter with your code then takes isn't published. Once you enter the code, you can order by phone.
-
First crypto send
Within 1 day
No new-account wait is published. Once your delivery address is registered and a phone order is executed, the coins go out the same day in principle, at the latest by the next business day.
Typical times from each exchange's official pages, not scored. Waits before a first send protect customers from fraud.
Account activation
No fastest time is published. After pre-registering, you submit the application and two ID documents; review takes 1–2 business days. A letter with an identity code then arrives by registered, non-forwardable mail, and the account opens once you enter the code in My Page. Everything must be done within 3 months of pre-registering.
Limits
| What | Limit |
|---|---|
| Buying crypto |
|
| Yen deposits | No published limit |
| Yen withdrawals | No published limit |
| Sending crypto out | No published limit |
First crypto send-out
Coins aren't kept in an account: each time a purchase is executed, the BTC or ETH is sent to the delivery address you registered in My Page. A trade normally completes the same day, and delivery happens at the latest by the next business day after the trade. No new-account waiting period is published, and HashKey Japan pays the network fee.
Protections against fraud
- Before each delivery, HashKey Japan assesses the transfer's risk from the recipient details you registered and may refuse it or ask for more information. If details are missing or doubtful, the coins aren't delivered.
- When the destination is an exchange address, delivery waits until the Travel Rule notice to that exchange is complete, which can take extra time.
- Under the revised Foreign Exchange Act, HashKey Japan may ask for the purpose of a transfer, sender and recipient details, and supporting documents.
- Orders from a phone number other than the registered one get an extra identity check, and for large trades you may be asked to show the ID you submitted when opening the account.
- Transfers to online casino addresses are refused, and trading or the account is suspended if dealings with an online casino come to light.
Transfer rules
- Sending to your own (private) wallet
- Allowed
- What's required (Travel Rule)
- For each delivery address you register whether the recipient is you (if not, their name and address), the exchange's name if it's an exchange address, and the purpose. For exchange addresses, HashKey Japan notifies that exchange of sender and recipient details. Your own private wallet can be registered, and the terms make having your own wallet a condition of opening an account.
- Destinations you can't send to
- Because they use a different notification system, coins can't be delivered to bitFlyer, Coincheck, Crypto Garage or Binance Japan. Since 3 Aug 2026, foreign exchanges in the 63 countries and regions designated by the FSA are excluded too, and transfers to online casino addresses are refused.
Terms & conditions
- Ages 20 to 69 when applying, living in Japan, with full legal capacity
- Annual income and financial assets of ¥5 million or more (account criteria)
- You must not be a US taxpayer, a foreign PEP or linked to organised crime
- Foreign nationals need a status of residence granted for 1+ year with 3+ months left (not diplomatic, official or short-term stay), and must submit a residence card or special permanent resident certificate
- You need your own crypto wallet, your own email address, a mobile or landline where you can always be reached, and a Japanese bank account in your name
- You must be able to phone in orders yourself and check documents and My Page on a PC or similar
- One account per person in any name, and you must be able to receive registered mail at your registered address
- No account opening or maintenance fees (postage for any documents you mail is yours)
Restrictions
- BTC and ETH only. Orders by phone (or a designated call app) only; no internet, fax or in-person orders
- Orders are taken weekdays 9:00–16:00 only (not on public holidays or over New Year)
- The minimum order is ¥1 million. Each customer's trading limit is set from their income and assets and isn't published
- If you deposit and then don't order, the help centre lists a return fee (¥550 for yen, 0.0005 BTC or 0.005 ETH), while the pre-contract document says a deposit is returned at HashKey Japan's cost if you cancel because the final price doesn't suit you. Check before depositing
- Because of Travel Rule system differences, coins can't be delivered to bitFlyer, Coincheck, Crypto Garage or Binance Japan addresses, nor to foreign exchanges in the 63 countries and regions the FSA designates
- There's no app, and My Page is built for PCs (not optimised for phones). Individuals can apply from an Android phone's browser, but not from an iPhone
- Under the terms, the account can be frozen or closed when you turn 75
How to open an account
-
1
Check the conditions and get ready
Before applying, check that you meet the age, residence, income and asset conditions, and have your own wallet for receiving coins, two ID documents and a bank account in your name ready.
- You must be 20–69 when you apply and live in Japan. Applications from people aged 70 or over aren't accepted.
- The account criteria require annual income and financial assets of ¥5 million or more. If your real figures fall short, choose a regular exchange where you can buy small amounts.
- Purchased BTC and ETH are sent to your own wallet after each trade, so set up a receiving wallet first (an account at another exchange, a hardware wallet and so on). The terms also require you to have your own wallet.
- Prepare two ID documents showing your current address (driver's licence, the photo side of a My Number card, a residence card and so on). Foreign nationals must include a residence card or special permanent resident certificate.
- You also need a Japanese bank account in your own name to receive yen.
Tip Coins can't be delivered to bitFlyer, Coincheck, Crypto Garage or Binance Japan addresses, so pick another destination.
-
2
Pre-register with your email
From 「新規口座開設」 on the official site, register your email and a password, choose 「個人」 and press 「仮開設」. Then confirm via the link in the email.
- Open 「新規口座開設」 on the official site (tokyohash.jp).
- Enter your email address. Shared addresses and addresses already registered can't be used.
- Choose a password of 8–20 half-width characters using at least three of: upper case, lower case, digits and symbols.
- Choose 「個人」 (individual) and press 「仮開設」.
- Open the link in the verification email within 30 minutes; after that the registration lapses and you have to start again.
Tip If you don't finish the application, including documents, within 3 months, it lapses and the same email can't be registered again.
-
3
Agree to the terms and enter your details
Go on to 「口座開設申込」, read and agree to the terms and policies, then enter your basic details, occupation, income and assets, and the bank account for payouts.
- After verifying, press 「口座開設申込」 to start. If you stop part way, log in to My Page to pick up where you left off.
- Read the documents (terms of service, pre-contract document, account criteria and so on) and tick to agree. Documents are delivered electronically.
- Enter your name, address, date of birth and other basics exactly as on your ID documents.
- Enter your occupation, pre-tax income, financial assets and so on honestly. Your personal trading limit is set from the income and assets you declare.
- Register a Japanese bank account in your name for yen payouts.
- Check what you entered and move on.
Tip See "Application questions explained" below for what each question means.
-
4
Upload two ID documents
Straight from the completion screen, upload images of two ID documents that show your current address.
- Examples: driver's licence, My Number card (photo side only), residence card, special permanent resident certificate, or a residence record or seal registration certificate issued within 6 months. Check the full official list.
- A Japanese passport counts only if it was applied for by 3 Feb 2020; passports issued by other countries aren't accepted.
- If an ID shows an old address, add one supporting document (a utility receipt or tax certificate from the last 6 months, for example).
- Make sure the address, name and date of birth are sharp and match your application. Expired documents aren't accepted.
- You don't need to submit your My Number; hide the number on any document that shows it.
Tip If you use a health insurance card, mask the insured person's symbol and number.
-
5
After review, enter the code from the registered letter
Review takes 1–2 business days. The result comes by email; if approved, an 「口座開設手続き完了のご案内」 letter arrives by registered, non-forwardable mail. Enter its identity code in My Page and the account is open.
- The result is emailed to you. Reasons for the decision aren't disclosed.
- The letter goes by registered, non-forwardable mail to your registered address, and you can't choose a delivery date. If you have mail forwarding set up, cancel it first.
- If you're out, follow the missed-delivery slip and collect it before the deadline; if you miss it, ask for redelivery via the contact form.
- Log in to My Page with your email (or the 「MyページログインID」 in the letter) and password, then pass 2-step verification by picking the emoji sent to you by email.
- Enter the letter's identity code (only once) to finish. Keep the letter: it holds information you need for trading.
Tip You can't trade until HashKey Japan has confirmed you received the letter.
-
6
Register your receiving wallet address
In My Page, under 「お客様情報」 → 「出庫先アドレス」, register the address that will receive BTC or ETH, with the Travel Rule recipient details.
- Open 「お客様情報」 in My Page's side menu and, under 「出庫先アドレス」 in the middle of the screen, choose the coin(s) to register or change (BTC, ETH or both).
- Paste the receiving wallet address exactly. Coins sent to a wrong address may be lost for good.
- Say whether the recipient is you; if not, enter the recipient's name and address.
- If the address belongs to an exchange, pick its name from the 「業者名称」 list. Domestic exchanges not on the list can't receive deliveries.
- Choose the purpose of the transfer and finish.
Tip If the recipient details are missing or doubtful, the coins won't be delivered.
-
7
Order by phone and pay by bank transfer
Call on a weekday between 9:00 and 16:00 with your order and you'll get an indicative price and amount. Transfer yen to the designated account; once it's confirmed you get a final price, give the order, and the BTC or ETH is sent to your registered address.
- Call 050-3204-4855 from your registered number and give the coin (BTC or ETH), that you're buying, and the quantity or amount (¥1M–¥50M). Calls from another number get an extra identity check.
- The operator quotes an indicative price and amount; the price includes a fee-equivalent of 0.1–5.0%.
- Transfer from an account in your name to the designated account shown under 「振込入金先情報」 in My Page. For a quantity order, send a little extra in case the price moves. Transfers from someone else's account aren't accepted.
- When the money is confirmed, HashKey Japan contacts you, checks the order and quotes a final price. If you accept, give the order there and then; it's executed and can't be changed or cancelled afterwards.
- The coins go to your registered address, usually the same day and at the latest by the next business day after the trade; unused yen is returned to your bank account by the next bank business day.
Tip If the money can't be confirmed within business hours, it's handled the next business day; if you don't place the order that day, it's treated as cancelled and returned.
Application questions explained
What each question means and how to answer it accurately. Always answer truthfully. Answers that don't match reality lead to rejection or a frozen account.
Occupation
- What it means
- Used for identity checks and to judge whether your trading matches your circumstances.
- How to answer
- Give your current occupation honestly, choosing whatever is closest to your real position, such as company executive or self-employed.
Annual income (pre-tax)
- What it means
- Used to check the account criteria (income and financial assets of ¥5 million or more) and to set your personal trading limit.
- How to answer
- Declare your approximate pre-tax income honestly. Don't overstate it to meet the condition: the account criteria state that a false declaration can lead to trading being stopped or the account closed. If you don't meet the condition, choose a regular exchange instead.
Financial assets
- What it means
- Total savings, stocks, funds and similar. Like income, it's used for the account criteria and your trading limit. Real estate is normally not included.
- How to answer
- Declare the approximate total in your own name honestly (not your family's).
Bank account for payouts
- What it means
- Where sale proceeds and any yen not used for a purchase are paid.
- How to answer
- Register a Japanese bank account in your own name; accounts in anyone else's name, including family, can't be used.
Confirmation that you are not a US taxpayer or a foreign PEP
- What it means
- The account criteria exclude US taxpayers and foreign PEPs (senior foreign public officials, their families and the like).
- How to answer
- Answer truthfully. If you have US tax obligations or are a foreign PEP, you can't open an account at HashKey Japan.
Recipient details for your delivery address (Travel Rule)
- What it means
- Required by law before any delivery: whether the recipient is you, the receiving business's name and the purpose. For exchange addresses, the details are passed to that exchange.
- How to answer
- For your own wallet, choose yourself as the recipient; for an exchange address, choose its name from the list. Pick your real purpose. Inaccurate details mean the coins won't be delivered.
Tips for a smooth signup
- Have your receiving wallet ready before you apply; you can't receive BTC or ETH until the address is registered in My Page.
- Deposits are checked within business hours, so on trading day transfer the money with time to spare.
- If you want to start small or don't meet the income and asset conditions, a regular exchange where you can buy small amounts suits you better.
- Applications are accepted only up to age 69. If you're 70 or older, consider exchanges with no upper age limit, such as bitFlyer, bitbank or GMO Coin.
- Before registering an address, check that HashKey Japan can deliver there (not to bitFlyer, Coincheck and a few others). Coins sent to a wrong address can't be recovered.
