First crypto send-out
After entering the account-opening code, register a destination address with recipient details, click the link in the confirmation email and wait for GMO Coin's check. Since 29 Aug 2026 you can't send to that address until 24 hours after the "address list review complete" email. Every send is reviewed and needs 2-step verification.
Protections against fraud
- 24-hour hold on new addresses (from 29 Aug 2026): you can't send to an address until 24 hours after GMO Coin's "address list review complete" email, including addresses you registered before and add again. It protects against phone scams, social-media investment and romance scams, and phishing.
- Pay-easy deposits: crypto worth the total of your Pay-easy deposits over the past 7 days can't be sent out (7 days including weekends and holidays, counted from the 6:00 JST business-day switch).
- Send review: GMO Coin checks every send, which can take time or end in refusal, without disclosing why. Sends to Japanese exchanges only go through once the receiving exchange has confirmed the Travel Rule information.
- A destination is only added once you click the link in the confirmation email and GMO Coin finishes its check. Registration can be refused, and addresses suspected of links to sanctions or illegal services may be removed from your list.
Transfer rules
- Sending to your own (private) wallet
- Allowed
- What's required (Travel Rule)
- When adding a destination you choose GMO Coin or elsewhere, the wallet type (exchange/service or private wallet) and whether the recipient is you, then enter a label, the address, the exchange's location and name, the recipient's name (kanji, kana and roman letters), country or region of residence, address and your relationship (date of birth optional). Exchanges in Japan and the other notification jurisdictions receive the legally required information via Sygna Hub.
- Destinations you can't send to
- Japanese exchanges GMO Coin can't notify are blocked, including bitFlyer, Coincheck, CryptoGarage and Binance Japan (as of 3 Aug 2026), which use a different Travel Rule system. Foreign exchanges in the 63 FSA-designated notification jurisdictions listed on GMO Coin's Travel Rule page (including the US, UK, Singapore, Hong Kong and South Korea) are blocked too.

How to open an account
-
1
Register your email
Enter your email in the signup form and choose "Individual". You'll get a password-setup email (the link is valid for one week).
- On GMO Coin's official site, choose 「口座開設」 → 「いますぐ口座開設」.
- Enter your email and tick 「個人のお客さま」 (individual). Tick 「私はロボットではありません」 as well, complete the reCAPTCHA check if one appears, and press 「口座を開設する」.
- Use an email address that is yours alone. Addresses shared with someone else or already registered are refused, and an address used for a closed account can't be reused.
- A password-setup email arrives; open the link in it. The link is valid for one week. If it doesn't come, check your spam folder and that mail from coin.z.com is allowed.
- You must live in Japan and be 20 or older (there is no upper age limit). 18- and 19-year-olds can't apply even though they are legal adults, and foreign nationals must have been in Japan for at least 6 months.

Set a password and 2-step verification
Set a password (8–30 characters, at least two of letters/numbers/symbols) and verify your phone: SMS for mobiles, a voice call for landlines.
- On the linked page, type a password twice and press 「設定する」. It must be 8–30 half-width characters including at least two of letters, numbers and symbols; easily guessed passwords are rejected.
- Next, enter the phone number for 2-step verification, press 「コードを送信」, check the number shown and press 「コードを送信する」. Use a number of your own on which GMO Coin can always reach you.
- Mobile numbers get the code by SMS, landlines by an automated voice call. If your mobile can't receive SMS, tap 「SMSが受信できない場合はこちら」 at the bottom to get a voice call instead. SMS codes normally come from 0005568000.
- Enter the code and press 「認証する」. When the completion screen appears, press 「開設申込へ進む」 to move on to your details.
- 2-step verification is always required for logging in on a new device or browser, entering the account-opening code, changing your details or password, withdrawing yen and sending crypto. You can switch to an authenticator app (Google Authenticator) after the account opens.

Enter your details
Enter your name and address exactly as on your ID, then answer the questions on purpose, occupation, income, assets and experience.
- Following the prompts, enter your name, date of birth, address and so on exactly as written on the ID you will submit. Check you haven't typed a kanji name in katakana or roman letters, and watch for place names that have changed.
- Match the address format to your ID ("1-2-3" or "1丁目2番3号") and don't enter the chome twice. If the postcode search can't find your address, search with the last four digits as 0000 and type the rest yourself.
- When you choose your 「お取引の目的」 (purpose, multiple choice), 「投資方針」 (investment policy) and 「利用する取引」 (products you'll use) appear to match. If you'll only buy and sell coins, you don't need the leverage purpose; choose 「現物取引のみ」 (spot only).
- Answer the questions on occupation, main source of income, annual income, financial assets, trading experience, why you're opening the account, nationality, tax residence, US tax obligations (FATCA), foreign PEP status and whether you could know non-public information about crypto assets. Answer all of them truthfully.
- Choosing the leverage purpose means you'll have to submit your My Number. Foreign PEPs can't open an account, and the details you register must be free of false or missing information. See "Application questions explained" below for what each question means.
- Press 「確認画面へ」 and check everything on the review screen; use 「戻る」 to fix mistakes. Finally read the terms, tick each box and press 「ご本人確認書類の提出へ」.
Tip Type your address exactly as it appears on your ID, including how block numbers are written. A mismatch is one of the most common reasons for rejection.

Choose an ID check method
Recommended: "App easy ID check" (IC chip + face photo). Alternatives are "Web easy ID check" (photos of ID and face) and "Image upload" (two documents, then a letter by post).
- There are three methods. The one with the fewest steps is 「アプリでかんたん本人確認」: the smartphone app reads your ID's IC chip and takes your face photo. Nothing is posted, and you can trade in as little as 10 minutes.
- The app method needs an NFC phone and a driver's licence, My Number card (not the notification card), residence card or special permanent resident certificate. For a licence, have the two 4-digit PINs you set when it was issued. Foreign nationals use a residence card or special permanent resident certificate.
- Install the app, log in with the account you applied with, and follow the prompts to read the chip and take your face photo. When the completion screen appears, wait for the review.
- 「ウェブでかんたん本人確認」 photographs your ID and face in the phone's browser, and also accepts a driving history certificate. If you are on a PC, scan the QR code shown with your phone. Photos must be taken live; saved images and printouts aren't accepted.
- Take off masks and sunglasses and don't pause for long, or you'll have to start over. The web method is unavailable during the weekly maintenance on Saturdays 9:00–11:00 and just before it. Avoid glare and blur, and use a background that contrasts with the document.
- 「画像アップロード」 sends images of two documents from a PC or phone. It accepts more types, such as a Japanese passport with the holder's address page or a certificate of residence issued within 6 months, but the opening code then comes by post, so it's slower. Foreign nationals must use a residence card or special permanent resident certificate as the first document.
- Health insurance cards, Juki cards and the paper My Number notification card are not accepted. If the address on your ID differs from the one you registered, the account can't be opened, so after a move update the ID first.
Tip Reading a driver's licence chip needs the two 4-digit PINs you set when it was issued.

Review
As little as 10 minutes with the easy ID check, longer when busy.
- Review can finish in about 10 minutes, but may take several days depending on the checks and how busy GMO Coin is.
- Progress shows on 【会員ホーム】 after you log in. 「ただいま審査中です」 means wait; if a problem is listed, follow the instructions shown. 「審査が完了しました」 means you can go to the next step.
- You are also notified by email as things progress. If you can't find it, check your spam folder and allow mail from [email protected].
- Some applications are declined after review, and GMO Coin doesn't disclose the reason.
-
6
Enter your account-opening code
The code arrives by email (easy ID check) or by post (image upload). Enter it on the member page to finish.
- If you used the easy ID check (app or web), the account-opening code arrives by email after review. If you used image upload, it is mailed to your registered address as 「口座開設のお知らせ」.
- Log in, open 【会員ホーム】, enter the code and press 「口座開設」.
- Finally enter the 2-step verification code, and your account is open.
- The code expires after a while, and an SMS reminder comes as the deadline nears. Expired codes aren't resent; you would have to submit your ID again from the logged-in screen, so enter the code soon after it arrives.
- After opening, you can add a passkey as a login method; GMO Coin recommends registering one to protect against unauthorised logins.

Deposit yen
"Instant deposit" is free and immediate: docomo SMTB Net Bank, PayPay Bank and Japan Post Bank (up to ¥10 million each), plus MUFG, SMBC, Mizuho, Resona and Saitama Resona via Pay-easy (up to ¥999,999 each). From GMO Aozora Net Bank and Rakuten Bank you deposit by bank transfer and pay your bank's fee. An amount equal to a Pay-easy deposit can't be sent out as crypto for 7 days.
- There are two ways to deposit: 「即時入金」 (instant deposit) and 「振込入金」 (bank transfer). Use 【入出金】 → 【日本円】 on the member page (in the app, 【ホーム】 → 【入出金/振替】).
- Instant deposit is free and credited straight away from online banking: docomo SMTB Net Bank, PayPay Bank and Japan Post Bank allow ¥1,000 to ¥10 million per deposit; MUFG, SMBC, Mizuho, Resona and Saitama Resona go through Pay-easy at ¥1,000 to ¥999,999 per deposit.
- With instant deposit, after confirming on your bank's screen, keep going until GMO Coin's deposit-complete screen appears; stopping early can delay crediting.
- After a Pay-easy deposit, sending crypto out is restricted up to the deposited amount for 7 days (weekends and holidays included; days switch at 6:00 JST). Trading isn't affected.
- Bank transfer means sending money to your personal account shown under 【振込入金】 (GMO Aozora Net Bank, or Rakuten Bank via 「その他振込先」). Any bank works and there is no upper limit. Transfers from the same bank are free and credited almost in real time.
- The sender name must be your registered full name in kana. Adding a trade name or another name, or using roman letters, stops it being credited. Deposits from a differently named account can get trading suspended, and you pay the fee to have the money returned.
- From banks on the Zengin More Time system, transfers usually arrive within minutes. Nothing is credited during GMO Aozora Net Bank's maintenance (second Saturday of each month, 21:50 to 6:00 the next day).
Application questions explained
What each question means and how to answer it accurately. Always answer truthfully. Answers that don't match reality lead to rejection or a frozen account.
Purpose of trading (multiple choice)
- What it means
- What you'll use the account for. Your choice determines which follow-up questions (investment policy, products used) appear.
- How to answer
- Choose your real purpose. Selecting "for crypto leverage trading" enables leverage but requires My Number submission. If you only want to buy coins, you don't need it.
Purpose of trading (multiple choice)
Products you'll use
- What it means
- Choose "spot only" or "spot and leverage".
- How to answer
- First-timers normally choose "spot only". You can change it later.
Products you'll use
Occupation and main source of income
- What it means
- Used for identity checks and to judge whether trading fits your circumstances.
- How to answer
- Choose your current situation: e.g. "pension" if retired, "spouse's income" if a homemaker, whatever actually applies.
Annual income and financial assets
- What it means
- Used to check that trading is within your means. Financial assets means savings, stocks, funds, etc. (not real estate).
- How to answer
- Choose honest approximate amounts. Overstating doesn't improve your chances.
Experience with spot crypto and margin trading
- What it means
- Checks your understanding of the risks.
- How to answer
- "None" is fine. GMO Coin has a beginner Normal mode, and you can apply with no experience.

US tax obligation (FATCA)
- What it means
- US citizens, green card holders and US residents have US tax obligations.
- How to answer
- Answer "No" if none apply. If you are a US person, answer "Yes"; failing to declare it is a legal violation.
US tax obligation (FATCA)
Foreign politically exposed person (PEP)
- What it means
- Foreign heads of state, ministers, legislators, ambassadors and their families. Japanese politicians are not included.
- How to answer
- Most people answer "No". If you are one, you cannot open an account.
Foreign politically exposed person (PEP)
Insider (non-public information) status
- What it means
- Whether you could know price-moving non-public information, e.g. as an officer or employee of a coin issuer or exchange.
- How to answer
- Declare it honestly if your job or position applies. Most ordinary employees answer "No".

Tips for a smooth signup
- An NFC smartphone plus a My Number card or driver's licence gets you through in about 10 minutes with nothing sent by post.
- If you're 18 or 19, GMO Coin is not an option. Consider exchanges that accept 18+, such as bitbank (the finder on the home page lists them all).
- Start small (a few hundred yen) in the app's Normal mode, then move to the cheaper order-book exchange once comfortable.
- Use "instant deposit" for free, immediate funding.
