Key facts

Account activation

As fast as 1 day

CoinTrade says review can finish the same day the application is complete (usually a few hours to a few days; about 2–3 business days if something needs fixing). The ID check is an in-app IC-chip reading; the postal alternative adds days for the mail.

Limits

WhatLimit
Buying crypto
  • Each sales-desk order is capped by quantity per coin (e.g. 1 BTC, 15 ETH, 7,000 XRP, 100 SOL, 200 LTC). No yen cap is published. Source
Yen deposits
  • ¥100,000,000 per order Deposits from ¥1 up to ¥100 million (no period is stated; treated here as per deposit). No deposit fee, but you pay your bank's transfer fee. Source
Yen withdrawals
  • ¥100,000,000 per order Up to ¥100 million per withdrawal request, from ¥1. Each costs ¥550, and your balance must cover the amount plus the fee. While a withdrawal is pending you can't request another. Source
Sending crypto out
  • Each coin has a maximum withdrawal quantity (e.g. 1 BTC, 20 ETH, 10,000 XRP, 300 SOL, 500 LTC). No period is stated, so it is treated here as per withdrawal. Source

First crypto send-out

Once the account is open, you can request sends after setting up 2-step verification (required) and registering the destination address. No waiting period for new accounts is published. Each request must be confirmed through a link in an email, and sends are processed within a few hours to a few business days (about one business day after the booking).

Protections against fraud

  • Every send request has to be confirmed by clicking the link in an email sent to your registered address; nothing proceeds until you do.
  • To send to another exchange you must first issue a receiving address for that coin in your own CoinTrade account (needed for the Travel Rule notice). Otherwise the send is put on hold and you're emailed.
  • Sends to an exchange aren't processed until CoinTrade has finished notifying it of the required details, which can take extra time.
  • Requests are cancelled if the receiving exchange can't be identified, the notified details can't be confirmed, details registered as your own don't match your account, or the exchange is one CoinTrade can't notify.
  • While a withdrawal request is pending, you can't make another one.
  • Logins from outside Japan are blocked entirely, and use over a VPN isn't supported.

Transfer rules

Sending to your own (private) wallet
Allowed
What's required (Travel Rule)
Every destination must be registered first: a label, the address, the destination type (private wallet, a Japanese exchange from the drop-down, or other), the recipient (you or someone else; for others, individual or company plus name and address) and the purpose of the transfer. To add an address you must hold at least that coin's minimum withdrawal amount.
Destinations you can't send to
Foreign exchanges, and any Japanese exchange missing from the drop-down (for example ones on a different Travel Rule notification system), can't be sent to; such requests are cancelled.

Terms & conditions

  • Aged 18 to 79 when you open the account
  • Individuals living in Japan (you can't even log in from abroad)
  • Foreign nationals must provide a residence card or special permanent resident certificate with at least 3 months left before it expires
  • One account per person
  • Free to open and maintain; no trading commission
  • Later in life, you may be contacted to confirm whether you want to keep trading (official documents differ on whether this happens before age 75 or 80, so ask CoinTrade if it matters to you)

Restrictions

  • PEPs (domestic, foreign or international-organisation: ministers, ambassadors, central bank officers and similar, former holders and their families) cannot open an account
  • People under adult guardianship, and employees of other crypto exchanges (unless approved), cannot register
  • Account opening (details and ID check) is app-only. On a PC you can only set up your login, and ordering by yen amount is also app-only
  • Sales desk only (no order book, no leverage). The buy/sell spread is the real cost, and CoinTrade doesn't publish its size
  • JPY withdrawals cost ¥550 each, and crypto transfers carry a fee too (e.g. 0.0005 BTC for bitcoin)
  • Every Wednesday from 12:00 to 18:00, scheduled maintenance stops all services, including login and trading
  • No phone support; inquiries by web form only

How to open an account

  1. 1

Register your email and set a password

In the CoinTrade app tap "New registration", choose "Individual", enter your email and send the confirmation email. Set a password from the link in the email to finish the login setup.

    1. Install the CoinTrade app (iOS 16+ or Android 11+); the later ID check and personal details can only be done in the app. Tap 「新規登録」 at the bottom of the app's home screen (on a PC, 「無料口座開設」 on the website covers this login setup only).
    2. On 「無料口座開設」, choose 「個人のお客様」 as the customer type, enter your email and tap 「確認メールを送信する」. CoinTrade recommends web mail such as Gmail, Yahoo or Outlook.
    3. When 「確認メール送信完了」 appears, open the email titled 【CoinTrade】登録メールアドレスのご確認 and tap the URL in it to open 「パスワード設定」. If it doesn't arrive, check your spam folder.
    4. Use a password of 12–128 half-width characters with at least three of: lower-case, upper-case, digits and symbols. Enter it again in 「パスワード(確認用)」 and tap 「設定する」. Don't reuse a password from another service.
    5. 「ログイン設定受付完了」 appears and an email titled 【CoinTrade】新規口座開設申込みのご案内 arrives. This only sets up your login; the account application continues in the app.

Tip You can do this part in a PC browser too, but the later steps need the app.

  2. 2

Log in to the app and verify by SMS

Log in and tap "Register basic information" on the Holdings screen. A browser opens: enter your mobile number, then the 4-digit code sent by SMS (valid for one hour).

    1. On the app's home screen tap 「ログイン」, enter your email and password and tap 「ログイン」 (turn on 「自動ログイン」 if you want them saved).
    2. Tap 「基本情報の登録」 at the bottom of the 「保有資産」 screen. The 「SMS認証」 page opens in an external browser.
    3. Enter your own mobile number that can receive SMS and tap 「認証コード送信」. A number already registered at CoinTrade can't be used.
    4. Enter the 4-digit code from the SMS and tap 「認証」. If it hasn't arrived within a minute, use 「SMSを再送信する」. The code is valid for one hour.
  3. 3

    Accept the documents

Open and read each of the documents, then tap "Agree to the documents I've read".

    1. After the SMS check, the 「各種交付書面の承諾」 screen lists 「CoinTrade利用規約」, 「契約締結前書面」, 「プライバシーポリシー」, 「取引にあたっての表明確約書」 and 「その他」.
    2. Tap each one to open and read it; a tick appears next to each document you've opened. 「取引にあたっての表明確約書」 contains statements you yourself are making, so read it with care.
    3. Once all are opened, the 「確認した書面に同意する」 button becomes active; tap it if you agree.
  4. 4

    Read your ID's IC chip

Japanese nationals choose a My Number card or driver's licence; foreign nationals choose a residence card or special permanent resident certificate. For a My Number card, enter its signature-certificate password and scan the chip. Without the password, or with a driver's licence, you scan the chip and also take a face photo.

    1. Read the 「口座開設」 screen, tap 「次へ」 and choose your nationality and document: a My Number card or driver's licence for Japanese nationals, a residence card or special permanent resident certificate (3+ months left) for foreign nationals. A document whose details aren't current won't be accepted.
    2. Tap 「CoinTradeアプリを起動する」. The reading is done by Liquid Inc. on CoinTrade's behalf, so read its privacy policy and terms and tap 「同意して次へ進む」.
    3. My Number card, password known: choose 「暗証番号がわかる方」, enter the signature-certificate password (6–16 letters and numbers) and place the card on the phone. Only name, gender, date of birth and address are read. Five wrong entries in total lock it; unlocking is done at your city office.
    4. My Number card, password unknown: choose 「暗証番号がわからない方」, enter your date of birth (type A for Japanese-era years, type B for Western years), the expiry year and the 4-digit security code on the front of the card, read the chip, then take your face photo as instructed.
    5. Driver's licence: if you remember the PINs, choose 「覚えている」, enter the two 4-digit PINs you set when the licence was issued or renewed, read the chip and take a face photo. Three wrong entries in total block reading until restored at a licence centre or police station. If you've forgotten them, pick another document.
    6. Before reading, unplug chargers and earphones and make sure the phone is well charged. With no usable document, or if the chip won't read, apply for the postal check via 「郵送本人確認を利用する」 on the contact form. Using the non-forwardable letter you receive, return one original issued within 6 months: a certified residence record (住民票の写し), a seal registration certificate, or a family register copy with its 戸籍の附票 attached. Photocopies aren't accepted.

Tip A driver's licence needs the PIN you set when it was issued. If you have no suitable ID or don't know the PIN, you can verify by post instead: you return one original document, such as a residence record (住民票の写し) issued within the last 6 months (photocopies are refused). It takes longer.

  5. 5

    Enter your details and submit

Enter your name, address, occupation, income, assets, experience, purpose and so on across two screens, then tap "Register" on the review screen.

    1. On 「基本情報入力1/2」 enter your name and its katakana reading; the katakana must match your bank account name or yen deposits and withdrawals won't work. Date of birth and nationality are fixed from the chip reading.
    2. Choose your gender. For the address, enter the postal code, press 「住所検索」 and check the prefecture and the rest; only edit the street part if it wasn't filled in or shows garbled characters.
    3. On the same page, answer the radio questions on US tax obligation, PEP status and insider status; choosing the 'applies' side means you can't apply. 居住国 is 「日本」 or 「日本以外」, and you can't apply if you live outside Japan. Answer each one truthfully.
    4. Tick 「すべての内容が最新の情報と一致していますか?」 and tap 「次へ」. If an item you can't edit is wrong, you'll need to redo the online ID check with a document that shows your current details.
    5. On 「基本情報入力2/2」 choose occupation, annual income, main source of income and own assets, then the purpose of trading (several allowed) and your crypto investment experience. The campaign-email box is optional. Tap 「次へ」.
    6. Check everything on 「基本情報入力内容確認」; to change something, tap 「修正する」 at the top right. When it's all correct, tap 「登録」 to apply.

Tip See "Application questions explained" below for what each question means.

  6. 6

    Review, then your account opens

Review can finish the same day and usually takes a few hours to a few days, or about 2–3 business days if something needs fixing. You can start once the "account opened" email arrives.

    1. After 「登録」, the app shows that your application is under review. It can finish the same day and usually takes a few hours to a few days.
    2. If something needs fixing it takes about 2–3 business days (excluding weekends and holidays). If it takes longer, look for a follow-up email from [email protected], including in spam and trash.
    3. You can start once an email titled 【CoinTrade】新規口座開設が完了しました arrives. Yen can't be deposited before then.
    4. If you chose the postal check, review can't finish until the letter has gone out and your document has come back, so allow extra days.

Tip Check your spam folder for follow-up emails from [email protected].

    Set up 2-step verification

2-step verification is required for trading, crypto transfers and JPY withdrawals (including registering your bank account). Set it up with an authenticator app such as Google Authenticator.

    1. Install a supported authenticator: Google Authenticator (iOS or Android), Authy (iOS or Android) or the iOS password manager. SMS or phone-call codes aren't offered for 2-step verification.
    2. In the app open 「マイページ」 (bottom right) → 「各種情報」 → 「セキュリティ」 → 「二段階認証」, tap 「設定を開始する」 and choose your authenticator.
    3. When asked for a password, enter your CoinTrade login password (entering something else here is a common cause of errors).
    4. Copy the setup key shown and add it manually in the authenticator (any account name; paste the key). The setup key is your backup and can't be shown again after setup, so keep a copy somewhere safe.
    5. Enter the 6-digit code from the authenticator, tap 「設定する」 and check it shows as set. Codes change every 30 seconds, so watch the remaining time as you type.
    6. You need 2-step verification for trading, crypto sends and yen withdrawals (including registering your bank account). Don't delete the authenticator afterwards, and move it from the old phone when you change handsets. If codes fail, set the phone's clock to automatic.

  8. 8

    Deposit yen and buy

Go to Deposit/Withdraw > Deposit > JPY in the app and transfer money to the account shown. CoinTrade charges no deposit fee, but you pay your bank's transfer fee. There's also a free "scheduled deposit" that pulls a set amount from your bank account each month.

    1. Tap 「入出金」 → 「入金」 → 「日本円」 on the home screen to see the account to transfer to.
    2. Transfer from a bank account in your own name, by online banking or ATM. Money sent under a different name, such as a family member's, has to be returned through a recall (組戻し), which takes about a week to 10 business days.
    3. Deposits are usually credited in about 15 minutes (sometimes hours), and you get an email. Every Monday 0:00–7:00 is real-time deposit maintenance; transfers made then are credited after 7:00 on the next business day. No deposit fee, but you pay your bank's transfer fee.
    4. For an automatic monthly deposit, go to 「定期入金」 in マイページ → 「引落口座を登録する」, register your bank account on the partner site and set an amount of ¥500 or more (free).
    5. To buy, tap 「売買」 on the home screen, pick a coin, tap 「購入」, enter the amount and confirm with 「購入する」. You can buy from ¥100, but sales-desk prices include a spread. Trading stops for maintenance every Wednesday 12:00–18:00.

Tip Transfer from an account in your own name. Money sent from, say, a family member's account has to be returned.

Application questions explained

What each question means and how to answer it accurately. Always answer truthfully. Answers that don't match reality lead to rejection or a frozen account.

Occupation
What it means
Used for identity checks and to judge whether your trading fits your circumstances.
How to answer
Pick your current occupation as it is. Students, homemakers, retirees and the unemployed should pick whatever applies.
Annual income and main source of income
What it means
Used to judge whether trading is within your means. "Main source of income" asks where most of your income comes from.
How to answer
Give your approximate pre-tax income; little or no income is fine to declare. For the source, pick what really applies, including a pension or a family member's income. Declaring more doesn't unlock any extra services.
Own assets
What it means
A rough figure for the assets in your own name, mainly savings, stocks and funds (follow any explanation shown on screen).
How to answer
Choose the approximate amount in your own name (not your family's). A small amount is fine as long as it's the truth.
Investment experience
What it means
Checks your understanding of the risks.
How to answer
If you have none, just say so. CoinTrade is designed for first-timers too, and overstating your experience gives no advantage.
Purpose of trading
What it means
Required under Japan's anti-money-laundering law. The options are acquiring crypto, storing crypto, receiving/sending crypto, and investing in crypto.
How to answer
Choose what matches how you'll actually use the account. Trading that differs sharply from your declared purpose, income or assets can lead to follow-up questions or requests for extra ID documents.

Purpose of trading

  • Acquiring crypto assets 暗号資産の取得
  • Storing crypto assets 暗号資産の保管
  • Receiving and sending crypto assets 暗号資産の受取・送付
  • Investing in crypto assets 暗号資産への投資
Answer choices as listed on the official form. Pick the one that is true for you.
US tax obligation (are you a US citizen or resident?)
What it means
Checks whether you are a US taxpayer under FATCA: US citizens, green card holders and US residents (including by the 3-year days-of-presence test).
How to answer
Answer "No" if none apply. If you are a US person, declare it honestly. If unsure, CoinTrade advises checking with a tax professional.

US tax obligation (are you a US citizen or resident?)

  • I am not a US citizen or US resident 米国籍、または米国居住者ではありません
  • I am a US citizen or US resident 米国籍、または米国居住者です
Answer choices as listed on the official form. Pick the one that is true for you.

Official explanation

PEP status
What it means
Covers senior public figures, whether foreign, Japanese or at international organisations (heads of state, ministers and vice-ministers, Diet speakers and deputy speakers, Supreme Court judges, ambassadors, central bank officers, senior officials of international bodies and similar), former holders and their families.
How to answer
Most people answer "No". CoinTrade does not open accounts for PEPs, including Japanese ones, and stops service if a customer becomes one later.

PEP status

  • I am not a PEP PEPsに該当しません
  • I am a PEP PEPsに該当します
Answer choices as listed on the official form. Pick the one that is true for you.

Official explanation

Insider (non-public information) status
What it means
Whether you hold material non-public information about coins CoinTrade handles, or about a crypto exchange, that could affect trading decisions.
How to answer
Declare it honestly if it applies (registration may then be refused). Working at a bank or securities firm is fine as long as you aren't an insider.

Insider (non-public information) status

  • I am not an insider (information holder) 情報取得者に該当しません
  • I am an insider (information holder) 情報取得者に該当します
Answer choices as listed on the official form. Pick the one that is true for you.

Official explanation

Country of tax residence
What it means
A filing for the international tax information exchange (CARF) that began in January 2026. For new accounts, your application details serve as the filing.
How to answer
Japanese residents enter "Japan". If you are tax-resident in several countries, list them all; for a foreign country you also need its taxpayer number. Refusing to cooperate or giving false details can lead to transactions being refused.

Official explanation

Tips for a smooth signup

  • Check your My Number card's signature-certificate password (6–16 characters) or your driver's licence PIN in advance. If you've forgotten the My Number password, ask at the city office where you're registered.
  • Apply from the smartphone app. A PC only handles the login setup; the ID check and personal details are app-only.
  • Every trade carries a spread because it's a sales desk only, so it suits recurring buys and staking for the long term better than frequent trading.
  • Each JPY withdrawal costs ¥550, so withdraw in larger, less frequent amounts. Remember you can't trade during maintenance on Wednesdays from 12:00 to 18:00.
  • If you use point sites such as Moppy, you can get started by exchanging points instead of depositing cash.
