As fast as 1 day

Coincheck advertises "as little as 1 day on a smartphone" (review done as soon as 1 day after submitting ID). Its FAQ estimates immediate to about 2 business days for the My Number card tap check, same day to about 2 business days for the photo check, and several business days for the postcard fallback. You can trade once you file the tax declaration after approval.

First crypto send-out

Once the account is open (ID approval plus the tax declaration), you can register a send address with your passkey and an SMS code and send crypto. Since 15 Sep 2026, though, a newly registered address can't receive sends for a set period after registration, and some sends require an extra My Number card check first.

Protections against fraud

  • New send addresses (from 15 Sep 2026): sends to a newly registered address, or one deleted and added again, are blocked for a set period after registration. Coincheck keeps the length undisclosed for security reasons and doesn't lift it early. It guards against fraud and against sends after account takeovers; trading, yen deposits and withdrawals, and sends to previously registered addresses are unaffected.
  • Quick and convenience-store deposits: assets equal to the deposit can't be sent as crypto, withdrawn as yen or moved to the lending account for 7 days (7 × 24 hours) after crediting. It is a security measure against illicit fund movements. Deposits by bank transfer are outside this rule.
  • Extra My Number card check (from 19 Jun 2026): some sends are held until you verify yourself by reading your My Number card (JPKI). People without a card, and foreign nationals, complete it through the contact form with an ID selfie. Coincheck doesn't publish which sends are affected, to prevent misuse.
  • After you change your registered phone number, crypto sends are unavailable for 24 hours.
  • Large sends, or many sends in a short time, may be reviewed by Coincheck, which can take days or end in cancellation. Registering destinations and sending both require passkey authentication.

Transfer rules

Sending to your own (private) wallet
Allowed
What's required (Travel Rule)
To register a destination you enter a label, the address, the receiving service (picked from a pull-down; for personal wallets choose 「プライベートウォレット(MetaMask等)」) and the recipient type (yourself, another individual or a company), plus the recipient's name in katakana and country/region if it is not you. An SMS code confirms the registration. For exchanges in Japan and the notification jurisdictions, sender and recipient details are passed on under the Travel Rule.
Destinations you can't send to
Exchanges or services missing from the pull-down list can't be used (the "other exchange or service" option was removed on 9 Jul 2025). Zipangcoin (ZPG), listed on 31 Aug 2026, can't be sent out at all.

How to open an account

  1. 1

    Sign up in the app

In the Coincheck app, register your email and a password, then tap the link in the confirmation email from Coincheck.

    1. Install the Coincheck app from the App Store or Google Play; individuals open their account in the app. You must live in Japan and be 18–74: people aged 75 or over, under 18, or living abroad are not accepted.
    2. Tap 「会員登録」 (sign up) at the bottom of the app and enter an email address you actually use, that can send and receive, and that has never been registered with Coincheck.
    3. Choose a login password mixing letters, numbers and symbols, one you have never used anywhere else, and tap 「登録」.
    4. An email titled 「【Coincheck】登録メールアドレス確認のお願い」 arrives from [email protected]; tap the link in it. If asked which app to open it in, choose Safari, and if the Coincheck app doesn't open, tap 「DOWNLOAD APP」 on the page that appears and launch the app from there.
    5. When the app shows 「かんたん3ステップで始めよう」, your sign-up is complete. If no email arrives, check your spam folder, allow mail from coincheck.com and request it again.
    6. From 「はじめる」 you then go through the passkey, the key terms, nationality and account type, ID submission, review and finally the tax declaration.

Tip Use a working email address that has never been registered with Coincheck.

  2. 2

    Register a passkey (required)

Enter the code sent by email (valid for 5 minutes), then register a passkey with your phone's fingerprint, face recognition or screen lock.

    1. Prepare your phone first. On an iPhone, set up Face ID, Touch ID or a passcode, and turn on iCloud Keychain and two-factor authentication for your Apple Account. On Android, turn on the screen lock. Update the app to the latest version (4.14.0 or later).
    2. On the 「かんたん3ステップで始めよう」 screen tap 「はじめる」, then tap 「次へ」 on the passkey screen.
    3. Enter the verification code emailed to you. It is valid for 5 minutes; if you requested several, use the latest one. If it doesn't arrive, check your spam folder and mail filters.
    4. Follow the prompts to register the passkey with your fingerprint, face or screen lock. Coincheck recommends saving it in the Passwords app on iPhone or in Google Password Manager on Android.
    5. Once it is registered you move on. The passkey is mandatory for opening an account and is also used later to register send addresses and to send crypto. You can register passkeys on more than one device.

Tip The passkey protects against unauthorised use; you can't open an account without it.

  3. 3

Review the key terms and agree

The acceptance conditions (age, country of residence, etc.) are shown. Check them, then agree to the key documents.

    1. After the passkey, tap 「次へ」 to see the conditions for applying (living in Japan, being 18–74 and so on). Check that they apply to you and tap 「次へ」.
    2. Under 「各種重要事項の確認」, open and read each document, including the terms of use. They also explain price risks and how fees work, so it is worth reading them.
    3. If you agree, tap 「同意する」, then tap 「同意する」 again on the confirmation screen.
    4. The new combined cards, 「特定在留カード」 and 「特定特別永住者証明書」, can't currently be used to open an account.
  4. 4

    Choose nationality and account type

Choose your nationality and confirm which accounts to open. The spot account is required. In the iOS app, the leverage account is preselected for Japanese nationals.

    1. In the iOS app a 「取引口座の申込」 screen explains the spot and leverage accounts. Read it and tap 「次へ」.
    2. Select your nationality and tap 「次へ」.
    3. Check which accounts will be opened. The spot account is mandatory. For Japanese nationals the leverage account is ticked by default; foreign nationals can currently open a spot account only.
    4. If you only want to buy and sell coins, untick the leverage account. When asked 「まとめて申込をしませんか?」, tap 「今回はまとめて申込をしない」 to go on to submitting your ID.
    5. Applying for leverage as well adds a My Number card scan, submission of your My Number and a suitability check (questions on experience, assets, purpose and so on). Answer those truthfully too.
    6. The Android app has no account-type screen; you choose your nationality at the start of the ID submission step (STEP3).

Tip If you only want spot trading, untick the leverage account and choose not to apply for both this time. Applying for leverage adds My Number submission and a suitability check.

  5. 5

Pick an ID method and submit

With a My Number card and its PIN, use the tap ID check (scan the card with your phone). Without a card, if you don't remember the PIN, or if you're a foreign national, use the photo ID check (SMS verification, then photos of your ID and face).

    1. Tap 「次へ」 to start the ID submission and choose your document. Japanese nationals with a My Number card and its password use 「かざして本人確認」 (tap the card). Without the card or the password, or as a foreign national, you use 「写真で本人確認」 (photo check).
    2. The tap check asks for the signature-certificate password (6–16 capital letters and digits). You need an NFC phone (iOS 16+ or Android 9+); iPads aren't supported. Your 12-digit My Number itself is not submitted.
    3. Tap check: 「読み取りを始める」 → read the terms and tap 「同意して次へ進む」 → enter the password → 「開始」. When 「読み取り準備ができました」 appears, hold the card to your phone's reader for at least 5 seconds until 「カードの読み取りに成功しました」 appears. If you've forgotten the password, reset it at your city office or switch to the photo check.
    4. The photo check starts with SMS verification: enter your phone number, tap 「送信」, then type the 6-digit code and tap 「認証する」. Accepted documents: a driver's licence or driving history certificate, a My Number card (front only), an older Japanese passport with an address page, a residence card or a special permanent resident certificate.
    5. You photograph the front of the document, the front at an angle (to show its thickness), the back, your face, then a head-turn video. Remove hats, masks and coloured contacts and use good light; put the document on a non-white background for the back. After repeated failures you can switch to a postcard-based check.
    6. A residence card needs at least 2 months left before expiry, and you register under your real name, not an alias. Passports issued from 4 Feb 2020 (no address page) can't be used with the photo check.

Tip The tap check uses the signature certificate password (6–16 capital letters and digits). If you've forgotten it, reset it at your city office or switch to the photo check.

    Enter your details

Enter your name, date of birth, gender, occupation and address, plus purpose of use and trading experience, and answer whether you are a foreign PEP.

    1. On the basic-information screen, enter your name, date of birth, gender, occupation, address and so on. On the tap route this screen comes after the card scan; on the photo route it comes before the photos.
    2. Write your name exactly as on the document and its reading in katakana. The full-name field fills in automatically; make sure there is a space between family and given name. On the tap route, the name and address read from the card can't be edited in the app.
    3. Enter the address in full, from prefecture down to block number, building and room number, exactly as on the document. If the card still has an old address, update it at your city office before applying.
    4. Answer the questions on purpose of use, trading experience, financial assets and so on truthfully. If you are not a foreign PEP (a senior foreign public figure or their family), tap the switch so it turns green; if you are one, declare it honestly.
    5. A 「追加情報を入力してください」 (additional information) screen may appear. Fill it in to match your current situation.
    6. Review everything on the confirmation screen and tap 「確認して次へ」. When 「書類の提出が完了しました!」 appears, tap 「OK」. See "Application questions explained" below for what each question means.

Tip Write your address in full, exactly as on your ID. See "Application questions explained" below for what each question means.

    Review, then the tax declaration

The result arrives by email either way (as little as 1 day). After approval, file the tax-residence declaration and you can start trading.

    1. The result is emailed whether or not you are approved. As a guide: tap check, from immediately to about 2 business days; photo check, from the same day to about 2 business days; postcard route, several business days. If nothing arrives after a few days, check your spam folder.
    2. Once approved, file the 「税務上の届出」 (tax-residence declaration): log in and open the declaration page (coincheck.com/ja/carf_informations). The account isn't complete, and you can't trade, until it is filed.
    3. If you only pay tax in Japan, choose 「日本のみ」 and tap 「届出内容を確認する」. If you are also tax-resident elsewhere, choose 「日本以外の国も含む」 and enter each country and its taxpayer number (TIN), or the reason you can't give one.
    4. Check the details and declarations, tick the box and tap 「届出内容を提出する」. False or wrong declarations can be penalised, so be accurate. If you have six or more tax countries besides Japan, enter five online and declare the rest through the contact form.

    Deposit yen and buy

Bank transfers carry no Coincheck fee (you pay your bank's transfer fee). You can buy from ¥500 on the sales desk.

    1. Go to 「ウォレット」 → 「日本円を入金」 → 「銀行振込」 to see your personal deposit account (a virtual account at GMO Aozora Net Bank or Rakuten Bank). The first time, tap 「入金用口座を表示する」. Either bank works the same way.
    2. Transfer from your own bank account by online banking, ATM or at the counter. The sender name must match your Coincheck name (a maiden name or any other name counts as someone else's). Use the copy button to avoid typos, and keep the receipt until the deposit-complete email arrives.
    3. From banks that support 24/7 instant transfers, deposits usually show up within about 10 minutes to 2 hours, even at night or on holidays. From other banks, transfers made after 3 pm on weekdays or on holidays arrive the next business morning. Coincheck charges no deposit fee (you pay your bank's fee), and bank transfers have no upper limit.
    4. Payments from overseas services such as Revolut, PayPal or Wise may not be credited properly, so transfer from a Japanese bank.
    5. Quick deposits (Pay-easy) and convenience-store deposits cost from ¥770, and assets equal to the deposit can't be sent, withdrawn or transferred for 7 days (7 × 24 hours) after crediting. Limits: quick deposit ¥999,999 per payment and ¥10 million per day; convenience store ¥300,000 per payment and ¥999,999 per 3 days (fees included).
    6. To buy, tap 「販売所」 at the bottom, pick the coin's tab and tap 「購入」, choose JPY as the payment currency, enter an amount, tap 「日本円で〇〇を購入」 and confirm with 「購入」. The minimum is ¥500.
    7. Sales-desk prices include a fee-equivalent markup of 0.1–5.0% (1.7–7.0% for some coins). On the 「取引所」 order book in a PC browser, BTC/JPY trades with 0% fees; other coins move to tiered fees from 19 Oct 2026.

Tip Convenience-store and quick deposits cost from ¥770 and lock purchased assets for 7 days. If you're not in a hurry, a bank transfer is cheaper.

Application questions explained

What each question means and how to answer it accurately. Always answer truthfully. Answers that don't match reality lead to rejection or a frozen account.

Occupation
What it means
Used for identity checks and to judge whether trading fits your circumstances. Coincheck reviews registered details periodically under the law and industry rules.
How to answer
Pick your current occupation as it is; students, homemakers, retirees and the unemployed should choose whatever applies. If it changes later, update it in the app or on the website.
Financial assets
What it means
Total savings, stocks, funds, crypto and similar (real estate is normally excluded). Coincheck's FAQ says to include what you hold in your Coincheck account.
How to answer
Choose the honest approximate total in your own name (not your family's). Overstating gives no advantage.

Official explanation

Purpose of use
What it means
Required under Japan's anti-money-laundering law: what you will use the account for.
How to answer
Choose your real purpose. No option is "wrong" by itself.
Trading experience
What it means
Checks whether you understand the risks.
How to answer
If you have none, choose the option meaning "none"; beginners can apply for a spot account. Overstating experience only leads to products that don't fit you.
Nature of the funds
What it means
Asks whether the money you'll trade with is spare money you won't need soon, and similar.
How to answer
Answer as things really are. Buying crypto with living costs or borrowed money is risky, so start with money you can afford to set aside.
Are you a foreign PEP?
What it means
Covers people who hold or held important positions in foreign governments, and their families. Japanese politicians are not included.
How to answer
Most people answer "No". If you are one, say so honestly.

Official explanation

Tax-residence declaration (CARF)
What it means
A filing for the international crypto tax-information exchange (CARF), done after approval. You give your country of tax residence and, where needed, a taxpayer number (TIN).
How to answer
If you only pay tax in Japan, give Japan. If you are also tax-resident elsewhere (e.g. a US citizen living in Japan), declare that country too.

Official explanation

(Leverage account only) Suitability check
What it means
Checks, from your experience, assets, purpose and understanding of risk, whether leverage trading suits you.
How to answer
Answer honestly. If you don't meet the criteria, you can't open a leverage account. If you only want to buy and sell coins, there's no need to apply for one at all.

Tips for a smooth signup

  • Applications are accepted only up to age 74. If you're 75 or older, consider exchanges with no upper age limit, such as bitFlyer, bitbank or GMO Coin.
  • Have your My Number card and its signature certificate password ready to finish quickly with the tap ID check.
  • For major coins, the PC order-book exchange is usually cheaper than the sales desk (BTC/JPY has 0% fees; the other pairs move to tiered fees from 19 Oct 2026).
  • Support is mainly by email. For account opening problems, call 03-4405-3846 (weekdays 9:00–18:00) or use the staffed chat (weekdays 10:00–17:00).
  • From 1 Apr 2027, online account opening is due to rely mainly on IC-chip reading. Having a My Number card ready is the safest bet.
