Key facts
Account activation
As fast as 1 min
With the app's Sakutto ID check (reading your ID's IC chip with your phone), bitbank advertises approval in as little as 1 minute, and accounts usually open the same day; individual reviews can still take about 1–3 business days, up to about a week. The postal route (for example from a PC) adds about 1 business day of review plus delivery of an address-check postcard.

First crypto send-out
Once the account opens (usually the same day with Sakutto), every feature is available, and in principle there is no waiting period between depositing yen, buying and withdrawing crypto. Each withdrawal address must, however, be registered with recipient details and approved by bitbank first, and every withdrawal is confirmed through a link emailed to you.
Protections against fraud
- Address review: a new withdrawal address is registered together with recipient, address and purpose details and can only be used after bitbank approves it. The result comes by email, and an edited address goes back into review.
- After security changes (from 4 Sep 2026): removing a passkey, 2-step verification or SMS verification, or changing your registered email, can restrict crypto withdrawals for a period set by bitbank, to stop unauthorised withdrawals. Yen withdrawals and trading continue as normal.
- Right after the account opens, it can take some time before withdrawals become available.
- Each withdrawal only proceeds after you approve it via the link emailed to you. Large or clustered withdrawals and network upgrades can delay it, and withdrawals may be held, restricted or refused if bitbank suspects fraud or misuse.
Transfer rules
- Sending to your own (private) wallet
- Allowed
- What's required (Travel Rule)
- To register a withdrawal address you enter a label, the address, the destination type (an exchange or service picked from the list, or a private wallet), whether the recipient is you or someone else (and, if someone else, individual or company and their name), the recipient's address and the purpose of the withdrawal. For destinations covered by the Travel Rule, your details are notified with the transfer. Private wallets such as MetaMask or Ledger are allowed.
- Destinations you can't send to
- Exchanges and other VASPs that aren't in the list can't be used, even if typed into the "other" field (since 31 Jul 2025); bitFlyer and Coincheck are not on the list. Non-VASP destinations (domestic lending services, blockchain games and the like) are declared under "other" and approved case by case. Deposits or withdrawals involving gambling sites lead to account suspension.

Restrictions
- Foreign politically exposed persons (PEPs) cannot open an account
- People under adult guardianship cannot register (terms revised 31 Aug 2026)

- On a PC you can only use the postal ID check (you must receive a postcard, so it takes longer)

How to open an account
-
1
Register your email
Enter your email in the signup form on the official site. A verification email arrives.
- Enter your email in the sign-up form on bitbank's official site (bitbank.cc) and press 「登録」 (or 「口座開設」). You can start on a phone or a PC; the recommended browser is the latest Google Chrome.
- When 「メールを送信しました。」 appears, open the verification email and tap the link in it. If you can't find it, check your spam folder too.
- One account per person: if you already have an account, a new application won't be opened.
- For the fastest route, plan to do the ID check with 「サクッと本人確認」 in the smartphone app. Applying only on a PC means the postal ID check, which takes days because you have to receive a postcard.
- If your phone's text or display size is set to large, parts of the sign-up page may not show and you can get stuck. Set the display size back to the default.
Tip Check your spam folder too.

2
Set up a passkey and accept the terms
From the link in the email, register a passkey (log in with fingerprint or face) and accept the terms.
- On the page opened from the email, read the confirmations and the terms, agree and tap 「登録」. You are then asked to save a passkey.
- A passkey lets you log in with your fingerprint, face or screen lock (PIN) instead of a password. Your face or fingerprint data is never sent to bitbank. It resists phishing, and bitbank strongly recommends it.
- Choose where to store it (iCloud Keychain, Google Password Manager or a password-manager app), save it and tap 「次へ」. Once a passkey is set, password login is switched off automatically.
- Supported systems: iOS 16+, Android 10+, Windows 10+ and macOS 10.15+. Turn on biometrics or a screen lock first; on iPhone make sure iCloud Keychain sync is on, and on Android update Android System WebView.
- If you really can't register a passkey, tap 「登録ができない人はこちら」 at the bottom to register with a password instead. In that case, be sure to set up 2-step verification once the account opens.
Tip If you can't register a passkey, use the "can't register" link to set a password instead.
-
3
Choose account type and nationality in the app
Log in to the bitbank app and choose "Individual" and your nationality (Japanese / foreign).
- Install the bitbank app on your phone and log in. 「サクッと本人確認」 only works in the app.
- On the account-type screen choose 「個人」 (individual), then choose 「サクッと本人確認」 as the ID method (or 「郵送で本人確認を行う方はこちら」 for the postal route). The order of these screens can vary slightly.
- Choose 「日本国籍」 (Japanese) or 「外国籍」 (foreign national). It must match your ID document; a mismatch gets the application rejected with the message 「国籍に相違がございます」.
- Foreign nationals choose exactly the nationality printed on their residence card or special permanent resident certificate. Watch out for similar options: South Korean nationals, for example, choose "Korea, Republic of", not "Korea".
- Your nationality decides the document options: Japanese nationals can use a My Number card, driver's licence or driving history certificate; foreign nationals use a residence card.
Tip Your nationality must match your ID document. A mismatch gets the application rejected.

4
Read your ID's IC chip with "Sakutto" ID check
Scan the IC chip of your My Number card, driver's licence or driving history certificate (foreign residents: residence card) with your phone. With a My Number card and its PIN, no face photo is needed.
- Pick your document and say whether you remember its PIN (「覚えている」) or not (「覚えていない」). The PIN is the one you set when the card was issued or renewed; checking it beforehand makes things smoother.
- My Number card with its PIN: enter the PIN, tap 「開始」, and when 「スキャンの準備ができました」 appears, hold the phone against the card. No face photo is needed; you're done when 「カードの読み取りに成功しました」 appears.
- My Number card without the PIN: enter your date of birth, the expiry date and the security code, scan the card, then take face photos. Driver's licence with its PINs: scan the chip, then take face photos.
- Driver's licence without the PINs: photograph the front, the edge (thickness) and the back, then your face. For the face photos, follow the prompts (facing forward, changing your expression), check the image and the two check items and tap 「OK」.
- If the scan fails, check that NFC is on and take the phone out of its case. A My Number card also can't be read if you changed your address or name without getting a new signature certificate, or if the certificate expired (after the fifth birthday since issue).
- On some Android phones a 「このNFCタグをサポートしているアプリはありません」 message may pop up; it doesn't affect the scan, so carry on. If your current name or address appears only on the back of your licence, the PIN route won't work: go with 「覚えていない」 or use another document.
- If your document uses characters outside the standard kanji set, they appear as 「◻︎」 and can't be registered as they are. In that case use the driver's licence 「覚えていない」 route, where name and address can be edited, or the postal ID check.
Tip Have your PINs ready. If your My Number card's signature certificate (6–16 character password) has expired, it can't be read.
-
5
Enter your details
Name, date of birth and address are filled in from the chip. You add the reading of your name (furigana), phone number, purpose, occupation, income, assets and trading experience.
- If the scan succeeded, your name, date of birth and address are filled in automatically and can't be edited. Check they are right; if not, try another document or use the postal ID check.
- The reading of your name (furigana) isn't filled in, so type it carefully. A wrong furigana causes problems with yen deposits and withdrawals.
- Enter your phone number and answer the questions on purpose of trading, occupation, annual income, own (financial) assets, why you're signing up (how you found bitbank and why you chose it) and experience with crypto or similar trading. Answer every one truthfully.
- You also declare your tax residence (Japan only, or another country as well) and your name in roman letters. If you also owe tax elsewhere, declare that country correctly.
- Foreign politically exposed persons (PEPs) cannot open an account, and you must also confirm you are not linked to organised crime. Read these carefully and answer honestly.
- Answers such as no income or no experience are fine as long as they are true. See "Application questions explained" below for what each question means.
Tip See "Application questions explained" below for what each question means.

6
Review and submit
Check that the furigana is correct, tick the consent boxes and submit.
- When you finish, a confirmation screen appears. Go through the auto-filled name, address and date of birth and everything you typed, from top to bottom.
- You are asked whether the furigana is correct: choose 「はい」 if it is, or 「修正」 to fix it. You must answer this question.
- Read the statements next to the checkboxes at the bottom, tick them and submit. Your application is then complete, and the result will come by email.

Approval, then set up 2-step verification
With Sakutto, review usually completes the same day (1–3 business days when busy, up to about a week). Once the account opens, check your security settings: if you log in with a password, set up 2-step verification (an authenticator app); if you registered a passkey, password login is switched off and there's nothing more to set.
- With Sakutto, review usually finishes the same day and the account is ready right away (as fast as 1 minute). Individual reviews can still take about 1–3 business days, and up to about a week depending on the volume of applications.
- With the postal ID check, after review (usually 1 business day) bitbank mails an address-check postcard that can't be forwarded; the account is activated once receipt is confirmed or you enter the code printed on it.
- Once the account is open, every feature is available, including deposits, withdrawals and trading. 「セキュリティの強度」 in settings shows your current protection level (high, medium or low).
- If you signed up with a passkey, password login is off, which is the safest setting. Authenticator-app 2-step verification can only be set while password login is on, so there is nothing more to set up.
- If you registered with a password, set up 2-step verification straight away: 「設定」 → 「パスワード」 → 「二段階認証」, then scan the QR code with an authenticator app such as Google Authenticator, or paste the secret key.
- Enter the 6-digit code from the authenticator app into the bitbank app and press 「設定」. If you close or reload the screen midway, a new key is issued and the old code stops working, so register again.
- Later on, removing a passkey, 2-step verification or SMS verification, or changing your email address, can restrict crypto withdrawals for a set period as a safeguard against unauthorised withdrawals.

Deposit yen and buy
Deposit by bank transfer to your dedicated account at GMO Aozora Net Bank or docomo SMTB Net Bank. bitbank charges no deposit fee, but you pay your bank's transfer fee.
- Yen can only be deposited by bank transfer. In the app tap 「入金」 on HOME (or in the menu) → 「JPY日本円」 to see your personal deposit account.
- You can choose GMO Aozora Net Bank or docomo SMTB Net Bank; bitbank recommends GMO Aozora. For GMO Aozora, your name alone is enough as the sender name.
- For docomo SMTB Net Bank, put your deposit number (4 letters and 5 digits) in front of your name, e.g. ABCD12345ヤマダ タロウ. Without it the deposit isn't credited automatically and tracing it can take several business days.
- Always transfer from your own account under exactly the same name. Transfers from a family member's account, or under a name that differs even slightly, aren't credited; you then have to ask your bank to reverse the transfer and pay that fee.
- From banks on the Zengin network, deposits are credited around the clock, usually within 15 minutes to an hour. bitbank charges no deposit fee, but you pay your bank's transfer fee. There is no minimum or maximum deposit.
- Once credited, buy on the sales desk: 「販売所」 → choose a coin → 「買う」 → enter an amount → 「購入確認」 → check and tap 「タップして購入」. 「SUCCESS!」 means it worked. The buy price refreshes every 5 seconds.
- The sales desk charges no trading fee, but the buy/sell spread is the real cost. Once you are comfortable, the 「取引所」 order book is an option, with maker fees of zero or below.
Tip Transfer from an account in your own name. Deposits from a differently named account are not credited.
Application questions explained
What each question means and how to answer it accurately. Always answer truthfully. Answers that don't match reality lead to rejection or a frozen account.
Purpose of trading
- What it means
- Required under Japan's anti-money-laundering law: what you will use the account for.
- How to answer
- Choose your real purpose (long-term saving, short-term trading, etc.). No option is "wrong" by itself.
Purpose of trading
Occupation
- What it means
- Used for identity checks and to judge whether your trading matches your circumstances.
- How to answer
- Pick your current occupation as it is. Students, homemakers, retirees and the unemployed should pick the option that applies.
Occupation
Annual income
- What it means
- Helps the exchange judge whether your trading is within your means.
- How to answer
- Choose your approximate pre-tax income. If you have no income, choose the lowest band; that's fine. Overstating gives no advantage and can trigger follow-up checks later.
Annual income
Own (financial) assets
- What it means
- Total savings, stocks, funds and similar. Real estate is normally not included.
- How to answer
- Choose the approximate total in your own name (not your family's).
Own (financial) assets
Why you're signing up / how you found bitbank
- What it means
- Asks how you came to use the service.
- How to answer
- Pick the real reason (search, referral, article, etc.).
Why you're signing up / how you found bitbank
Experience with crypto or similar trading
- What it means
- Checks whether you understand the risks.
- How to answer
- "None" is fine if you have no experience. Beginners can open a spot account. Overstating experience only leads to products that don't fit you.
Experience with crypto or similar trading
Are you a foreign politically exposed person (PEP)?
- What it means
- Covers foreign heads of state, ministers, legislators, ambassadors, senior military officers and their families (current or former). Japanese politicians are not included.
- How to answer
- Most people answer "No". If you are a foreign PEP, bitbank cannot open an account for you.
Declaration that you are not linked to organised crime
- What it means
- Confirms you are not a member of, or connected to, organised crime groups.
- How to answer
- Read it and agree.
Tax residence country and name in alphabet
- What it means
- A filing for the international tax information exchange (CARF), required from 2026 including for new accounts.
- How to answer
- If you only pay tax in Japan, choose "Japan only". If you also owe tax elsewhere (e.g. a US citizen living in Japan), choose the other option and enter that country.

Tips for a smooth signup
- Apply from the smartphone app for the fastest route. On a PC you have to wait for a postcard.
- Check your My Number card PINs (4-digit and 6–16 character) beforehand. Your city office can reset them if forgotten.
- The exchange (order book) is cheaper than the sales desk. The sales desk charges no fee, but the buy/sell spread is the real cost.
- From 1 Apr 2027, online account opening is due to rely mainly on IC-chip reading. Having a My Number card ready is the safest bet.
