Key facts
Account activation
As fast as 1 day
BitTrade says its "Kantan" smartphone ID check (photos of your ID and face) can open an account and let you use it the same day at the earliest (nothing by post; review usually takes one business day). "Myna-ninsho" for Japanese nationals (My Number card IC chip, no PIN) also needs nothing by post, but no timing is published. The postcard route takes longer, because it finishes only when you enter the code from a postcard sent after the review.

First crypto send-out
BitTrade publishes no waiting period that applies only to new accounts. To send crypto you need 2-step verification and a pre-registered withdrawal address, which can be used only after BitTrade's security review (this can take time). Assets equal to deposits made by Pay-easy, at a convenience store or by AEON Bank quick deposit can't be withdrawn or sent out for 7 days.
Protections against fraud
- Yen and crypto equal to the total deposited by Pay-easy, at a convenience store or by AEON Bank quick deposit can't be withdrawn or sent out for 7 days from the deposit date. Bank transfers and quick deposits from other banks have no such hold.
- Each new withdrawal address goes through a security review, and you can't send to it until it passes.
- For anti-money-laundering reasons, withdrawals can take longer than usual. Depending on the receiving exchange, a withdrawal can be cancelled if the Travel Rule notification can't be completed.
Transfer rules
- Sending to your own (private) wallet
- Allowed
- What's required (Travel Rule)
- You can withdraw to private wallets such as MetaMask and Ledger. Withdrawal addresses must be registered in advance, declaring whether the recipient is you or someone else (if someone else: individual or company, name in kanji, katakana and English, and address), the destination type (domestic exchange, overseas exchange, private wallet, etc., with the exchange's name) and the purpose, and ticking the self-declaration. Notifications to Japanese exchanges use Sygna Hub.
- Destinations you can't send to
- You can't withdraw to wallets managed by bitFlyer, Binance Japan, Coincheck or Crypto Garage. Overseas exchanges are limited to those BitTrade accepts for registration (such as Binance, Bybit, OKX, Bitget, Gate.io, KuCoin, MEXC and Crypto.com).

How to open an account
-
1
Choose nationality, register email and password
In the signup form on the website or app, choose your nationality, enter your email and a password, and accept the terms.
- You must live in Japan, be aged 18 to 74, and have Japan as your only tax residence. People with US tax obligations and foreign PEPs can't apply.
- Open the 「口座開設」 (open an account) form on the website or in the app and choose your nationality as shown on your ID.
- Enter your email address and a password, then read and accept the terms.
- If a foreign national picks 「Japan」 as nationality, BitTrade sends a follow-up email and the application is delayed.
Tip Pick the nationality on your ID. If a foreign national picks "Japan", BitTrade sends a follow-up email and the application slows down.
-
2
Security check and email verification
Complete the on-screen security check, then enter the "new registration" code sent to your email.
- Complete the security check as instructed on screen. If it doesn't work, switch methods with 「認証方法の切り替え」.
- Enter the 「新規登録-認証コード」 (registration code) sent to your email and press 「新規登録」 (register).
- If the email doesn't arrive, check your spam folder and allow mail from @bittrade.co.jp.
Tip If it doesn't arrive, check your spam folder and allow mail from @bittrade.co.jp.
-
3
Choose an ID check method
Choose "Myna-ninsho" (Japanese nationals, My Number card, app), the "Kantan" ID check (photograph one of: driver's licence, My Number card, residence card or special permanent resident certificate on your phone) or postcard verification (upload two documents, then receive a postcard).
- Choose a method on the 「本人確認」 (ID check) page. Japanese nationals with a My Number card are recommended 「マイナ認証」 (Myna-ninsho): the IC chip is read, with no PIN entry, no document photos and nothing by post.
- 「かんたん本人認証」 (Kantan): photograph one of a driver's licence, residence card, special permanent resident certificate or My Number card live, plus a face photo and a short video. The account can open the same day at the earliest, with nothing by post. It's smartphone-only (Safari on iOS, Chrome on Android recommended), not for PCs or tablets, and doesn't accept driving history certificates.
- 「本人認証(ハガキ受取)」 (postcard): upload images of two documents, then enter the code from a postcard sent by non-forwardable mail after the review. Accepted: driver's licence, My Number card (front only), health insurance eligibility certificate, Japanese passport (only versions with the holder's address page) and residence card or special permanent resident certificate.
- Foreign nationals must submit a residence card or special permanent resident certificate whichever method they choose.
Tip With Japanese nationality, a My Number card and an NFC phone, Myna-ninsho is the easiest: no PIN, no document photos and nothing by post.

Enter your details
Enter your name (also in the Latin alphabet), landline and mobile numbers, occupation, income, main source of income, financial assets, purpose and experience, then tick the declarations.
- Enter your name, and your name in the Latin alphabet, exactly as on your ID and bank account.
- Fill in both the phone and mobile phone fields; if you have only one number, enter it in both. Double-check the number of digits, a common mistake.
- Enter your occupation, pre-tax annual income, main source of income, financial assets, purpose and trading experience. Income means your own income: even if you choose homemaker or not employed, give your own figure, not the household's. If you have a part-time job, choose 「パート/アルバイト」.
- Choose your real years of experience. Applications where occupation and income, or age and experience, don't fit together are often sent back.
- Read the declaration (not a foreign PEP, not a US taxpayer, no links to organised crime, no tax residence outside Japan) and tick 「以下すべて該当しません」 (none of these apply) only if that's true.
- With Myna-ninsho the order is reversed: you read the card and take the face photo first, then enter details such as your Latin-alphabet name and phone number.
Tip Write your name exactly as on your ID and bank account. If you only have one phone number, enter it in both fields. See "Application questions explained" below.

Verify with the IC chip or photos
Myna-ninsho: enter your date of birth, expiry year and security code (auto-filled on iPhone), tap the card on your phone and take a face photo. Kantan: photograph your ID, your face and a short video live. Postcard route: upload images of two documents.
- Myna-ninsho: enter your date of birth, expiry year and the card's 4-digit security code (on the front), then tap 「次へ」. On iPhone these fill in automatically; on Android, type them.
- Hold the card to the top of an iPhone, or to your Android model's reading spot. No PIN is needed. Then take a face photo.
- Kantan: photograph your ID live inside the on-screen frame, then take a face photo and a short video. If you applied on a PC, scan the on-screen QR code with your phone to continue.
- Tips: use the original and avoid blur, glare and cropping. Copies and scans aren't accepted. A weak connection can stop the camera frame from appearing.
- Postcard route: upload images of two documents (PNG or JPEG, up to 5 MB). Submit only the front of a My Number card, and mask the symbol and number fields on a health insurance eligibility certificate before uploading.
Tip If you applied on a PC, continue the Kantan check by scanning the on-screen QR code with your phone.

Review
With Kantan, review usually takes one business day (same day at best). If something is wrong you get a rejection email: fix it and reapply. On the postcard route, enter the code from the postcard (sent by non-forwardable mail) to finish.
- With Kantan, the review usually takes one business day, the same day at the earliest. No typical time is published for Myna-ninsho.
- If something doesn't match or needs checking, you get a rejection email. Log in, read the reason, correct it and apply again.
- On the postcard route, enter the code from the non-forwardable postcard under 「本人確認」 after logging in. Accounts whose delivery is confirmed may be activated automatically, in which case no code is needed.
- When you pass, you're notified by email and can start trading.

Set up 2-step verification
Set up SMS or Google Authenticator. You need it before you can deposit yen.
- 2-step verification is mandatory once the account is open; without it you can't deposit or withdraw yen.
- SMS: in the security settings choose 「SMS認証」, enter your phone number, tap 「コードを入手」 (get code), enter the 6 digits you receive, then the codes for the follow-up security check.
- Google Authenticator: install it first, then go to 「Google認証」 → 「認証アプリを設定する」 and scan the QR code or paste the secret key. Enter the 6-digit code from the app, tap 「設定」, and confirm with the SMS and email codes.
- The secret key (or QR code) is what you use to recover access if you change or lose your phone, so save a copy somewhere safe before you finish.

Deposit yen and buy
Quick deposit (docomo SMTB Net Bank, PayPay Bank, AEON Bank, Minna no Ginko) is free and usually lands in about 20 minutes. Bank transfers cost your bank's fee; Pay-easy and convenience-store deposits carry a fee.
- In the app, tap 「入金」 (deposit) → 「JPY」 and choose a method such as 「振込入金」 (bank transfer), 「クイック入金」 or 「コンビニ入金」 (convenience store). On a PC: 「資産管理」 → 「入金」 for JPY.
- For a bank transfer, pay into your dedicated deposit account. There's no deposit fee (you pay your bank's charge) and no maximum amount.
- Quick deposit (docomo SMTB Net Bank, PayPay Bank, AEON Bank, Minna no Ginko) is free and usually lands in about 20 minutes. PayPay Bank's limit is ¥300,000 by default; you change it at PayPay Bank.
- Pay-easy and convenience-store deposits carry a fee, and are capped at ¥9,999,999 and ¥300,000 per deposit respectively (fee included, once per 24 hours).
- Whatever the method, pay from an account in your own name. Assets equal to Pay-easy, convenience-store or AEON Bank quick deposits can't be withdrawn or sent out for 7 days.
- To buy: for coins on the order book, such as BTC, ETH and XRP, use the exchange (orders from ¥2); buy other coins on the sales desk, which has no fee but builds its cost into the buy/sell spread.
Tip Deposit from an account in your own name. After AEON quick deposits, Pay-easy or convenience-store deposits, an equal amount can't be withdrawn for 7 days.
Application questions explained
What each question means and how to answer it accurately. Always answer truthfully. Answers that don't match reality lead to rejection or a frozen account.
Declaration: "None of the following apply"
- What it means
- Confirms you are not a foreign PEP, not a US taxpayer, not linked to organised crime, and have no tax residence outside Japan (including dual residence). Tax residence means the country where you owe income tax; declaring it became a legal requirement in 2026 (CARF).
- How to answer
- Tick it only if none apply. If any one does, BitTrade cannot open an account for you (this includes US citizens and green-card holders, who owe US tax). If you're unsure of your tax residence, ask a tax adviser or the tax office; BitTrade says it can't advise on this. False declarations can carry legal penalties.
Occupation
- What it means
- Used for identity checks and to judge whether your trading matches your circumstances.
- How to answer
- Choose your current situation from: company officer, full-time employee, temp/contract worker, civil servant, organisation officer, organisation employee, self-employed, part-time worker, homemaker, student, unemployed or other. BitTrade asks people with a part-time job to pick "part-time".
Occupation
Annual income (pre-tax)
- What it means
- Helps the exchange judge whether your trading is within your means.
- How to answer
- Enter your own pre-tax income in units of ¥10,000 (¥3 million = "300"). BitTrade asks homemakers and the unemployed to give their own income, not the household's; if you have none, enter 0. Income that doesn't fit your occupation is a common reason for rejection, and overstating gives no advantage.
Main source of income
- What it means
- Required under the anti-money-laundering law to understand your income situation (added in April 2025).
- How to answer
- Choose your actual main source: salary, business income, real estate, interest/dividends, pension, stock/FX trading, head of household's income, or none. Retirees pick "pension"; people supported by family pick "head of household's income".
Main source of income
Total financial assets
- What it means
- Total cash, savings, stocks, funds and similar. Real estate is normally not included.
- How to answer
- Choose the band (from under ¥100,000 to ¥20 million or more) for the approximate total in your own name, not your family's. BitTrade says it may refuse applicants with very small assets on suitability grounds. That rule protects you, so pick the true band rather than a higher one.
Total financial assets
Purpose of trading
- What it means
- Required under Japan's anti-money-laundering law: what you will use the account for.
- How to answer
- Choose your real purpose: buying, transferring and managing crypto; asset management; living-expense payments; business-expense payments; or trust management. Buying to hold for growth fits "asset management".
Purpose of trading
Trading experience (spot crypto / margin trading)
- What it means
- Checks whether you understand the risks. Each is answered in years, from none to 10+.
- How to answer
- Choose your real years of experience; "none" is a valid answer. BitTrade says experience that doesn't fit your age gets applications rejected. If you have little experience, BitTrade may run an extra check that you understand the risks.
Trading experience (spot crypto / margin trading)
Name in the Latin alphabet
- What it means
- Required since April 2025 so BitTrade can check names against sanctions lists.
- How to answer
- Enter the name on your ID in the Latin alphabet. If you have a middle name, separate it with spaces as on your ID.
Tips for a smooth signup
- Japanese nationals should use Myna-ninsho. Have your My Number card, an NFC phone and the latest BitTrade app ready.
- If you're 75 or older, BitTrade isn't an option; consider an exchange with no upper age limit, such as bitbank.
- For coins on the order book (BTC, ETH, XRP and others), the exchange is cheaper. The sales desk charges no fee, but the buy/sell spread is the real cost.
- From 1 Apr 2027, online ID checks that rely only on photos of your ID and face are abolished by law. Having a My Number card ready is the safest bet.
Recent changes
- Guide published, covering the IC-chip "Myna-ninsho" check (from June 2026) and the Dec 2025 policy refusing applicants who are not tax-resident in Japan only.
